NFL Kicker Harrison Butker’s unhinged commencement speech

Harrison Butker went to a Catholic college and delivered a speech to Catholic graduates affirming Catholic doctrine. He was literally moved to tears when describing how much his wife means to him. He called out and attacked the lies that millions of young women have been told, lies which leave many of them lonely and miserable rather than fulfilled and happy.

Professional sports is full of criminals, domestic abusers, and men with a half-dozen children they don't raise. For the press to smear a brave, devout family man as an antisemitic, sexist pig is disgusting.

I stand with Harrison Butker.

What lies have women been told? Why aren’t they lies for men?

You can read the full transcript here: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesfarrell/2024/05/15/heres-harrison-butkers-controversial-commencement-speech-in-full/?sh=5156fc4b7937

He cites the lies that women have a place outside the home. He posits that women should focus on being wives, mothers and housemakers and that striving for a life or career outside the house is less fulfilling than focusing on your household.

The lies that men are told is that they are unimportant at home or in the community and that they should not focus on their jobs.

He's another of those trying to push for the white male privilege days of the 1950s where those that were not privileged white males knew their place.

Remember when Colin Kaepernick took a knee to protest for civil rights. I'm sure the NFL will be equally fairhanded here and blackball TFG.

This!!!

So arrogant to turn this speech into his own grievance peddling lecture. Uplift these folks.

That’s just basic human decency and responsibility. No awards needed. He didn’t say men need to do that at the expense of every other interest or desire they have in life. He DID say that about women.

Oh, you know, the lie that if they want to eat avocado toast, keep their money and not have kids, they are basically soulless sluts according to this kicker. Ha ha. I feel bad Catholics are wound up so tight. They’re beliefs are a myth anyway, but they’re so vigilant about nonsense.

He doesn’t speak for Catholics. He represents a right wing faction of Catholics who will eventually need to offshoot.

Or maybe he does. Maybe you’re out of touch and this kicker is just representing modern Catholicism. A lot of people are returning to some imagined base, “fundamentalist” Catholicism in recent years. It’s most likely a response to, like, their neighbors’ kid coming out as non-binary or some dumb sht and it freaks them out and they want to return to simpler times. Like I said earlier, there is also a lot of push back to the Pope in American Catholic circles, too. He’s viewed as too liberal.

What you are missing is that I’m not a progressive, I’m conservative, but more solidly in the middle. He is not a conservative, he is an alt-right Christian nationalist.

I hope the upcoming conservative priests don’t shy away from protecting Humana Vitea, all if it not just a cherry picked few.

He is a heretic, he speaks against long held Catholic beliefs. Pope John Paul, not just Francis.

For us very educated Catholics this is not new. These alternate Catholics did not want divorced people in the church receiving communion in the 70’s and 80’s. Are these new priests trying to forbid divorced people from attending church and being hod parents? Are they lecturing from the pulpit on the evils of Viagra?

Yawn… he’s a narcissist trying to use shock to make a name for himself. He’s committed a deadly sins.

He is a heretic which is a mortal sin and should be forbidden communion until he has made a full hearted contrition.

Open your eyes.

Simpler times when "let's make pretend there are no gay people, or trans people, or that human beings have sex, or that some human beings rape and abuse others even if they are clergy, or that women are incapable of leadership, were how it went . those simple old times.

He seems to be pretty mainstream for American Catholics. Or maybe you just never wanted to see the misogyny in your church.

This gives me hope (sincerely). In the darker parts of my mind I envision us all sleepwalking into a largely theocratic, male-centric government while still saying, "They would never do that" where "that" is any number of things: banning abortion even if the pregnancy kills you, or if you a 10 year old rape victim, banning birth control, repealing the civil rights act and not allowing pregnant or married women to work, etc. etc.

Good grief. I say this in all sincerity: you need therapy. None of the things you listed are happening, as much as you like to pretend they are. Every post like that just makes people take you less and less seriously.

So you have never read a history book, or you are too dim to understand what it teaches us.

DP. You’ve clearly been reading only fiction. PP is right - get help.

Gotta agree. While I’m not Catholic and don’t exactly agree with everything he said, here is an example of a family man who embraces his marriage, wife, and children. Not many NFL “stars” come anywhere close, and yet the same people tearing him apart probably idolize the pigs you describe.

Yes, those times.

I am still amazed that with the 50 or so reports that came out in the last few years about the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF KIDS THAT WERE MOLESTED BY PRIESTS OVER DECADES that the church wasn’t bankrupted, yet here are. People are doubling down and getting even more conservative. It’s weird.

Oh well at least the macro trend in the United States is more “spiritual, but not organized religion”. Young people see through your nonsense.

I posted that whole section earlier, but naturally it was ignored. Crickets, as expected.

Yeah, and that’s great and it’s true.

It doesn’t excuse the other parts alluding to “deviance” (gender or sexual orientation), how women should be subservient or generally how Covid masks are bad. He’s a zealot jock. Next!
Post his exact words. We’ll wait.

CK took a knee at his workplace, in his work uniform. Big difference.
