NFL Kicker Harrison Butker’s unhinged commencement speech

Anonymous
Here’s what I don’t get. Commencement speeches generally follow a template - reminisce about college/good times, talk about challenges that lie ahead, we shall overcome, congratulations. That’s pretty much it. What kind of narcissistic tool turns that into lecture?

This gives me hope (sincerely). In the darker parts of my mind I envision us all sleepwalking into a largely theocratic, male-centric government while still saying, "They would never do that" where "that" is any number of things: banning abortion even if the pregnancy kills you, or if you a 10 year old rape victim, banning birth control, repealing the civil rights act and not allowing pregnant or married women to work, etc. etc.

Sleepwalking into? It’s already here. The government is forcing incarcerated women to share spaces with males, resulting in sexual assault and pregnancy.

Harrison Butker went to a Catholic college and delivered a speech to Catholic graduates affirming Catholic doctrine. He was literally moved to tears when describing how much his wife means to him. He called out and attacked the lies that millions of young women have been told, lies which leave many of them lonely and miserable rather than fulfilled and happy.

Professional sports is full of criminals, domestic abusers, and men with a half-dozen children they don't raise. For the press to smear a brave, devout family man as an antisemitic, sexist pig is disgusting.

I stand with Harrison Butker.

What lies have women been told? Why aren’t they lies for men?

Men have been told for centuries that women were created to serve men.

Me too.

This is the condemnation. Light has come into the world and the world hates the light loved the darkness over the light because their deeds were evil.

Wut

The Christian nationalists in this thread are trying to cite Jesus and to claim that they and this dim football player share Jesus’s mantle.

What they do not get is that they and their beliefs are about as un-Christlike as a person can get.

Jesus was a the OG social justice warrior who believed in communes and social welfare. Is that the "light" you are referring to?

When Jesus was preaching, some people were grumbling that a woman wasn't doing her "fair share" of working in the kitchen. He responded to let her hear His words. Jesus didn't care about gender roles.

What the haters here are ignoring.... or are ignorant about.... is that Butker also told men that they need to be present and active in the lives of their wives and children.

Harrison did a great job of estranging his wife from the rest of the wives & GFs of the Chiefs. Almost as if he wants to isolate her and force her into a role of dependence….

Counterpoint
He’s just another in a long line of dickheads in the NFL.

Sure.
And, it's clear you did not listen to his speech.

I listened and I agree. He’s a dickhead.

Yeah, and that’s great and it’s true.

It doesn’t excuse the other parts alluding to “deviance” (gender or sexual orientation), how women should be subservient or generally how Covid masks are bad. He’s a zealot jock. Next!

This.

And then they get flustered and employ ad hominem attacks.

How about you guys approach us from the observable world?

Can we meet there and talk?

Like you leave your religious preconditions at the door. I will leave mine and we will just speak on the level about the content of his speech.

It’s clear he thinks gays are bad, being trans or non-binary is akin to “deviance”, women should be in the home, and that Covid safety precautions via masking is stupid and essentially kept people away from congregating when Covid was at its peak, which was actually a very smart thing to do given it was a novel global virus and we had no background info on it at the time.

Oh, you know, the lie that if they want to eat avocado toast, keep their money and not have kids, they are basically soulless sluts according to this kicker. Ha ha. I feel bad Catholics are wound up so tight. They’re beliefs are a myth anyway, but they’re so vigilant about nonsense.

He also told them to be toxically masculine calling natural family planning immoral. Which is against Catholic teachings.
Did he talk about celibacy inside a marriage? Did he say viagra was immoral?

Sprinkling lies within truths is how propaganda works.

He doesn’t speak for Catholics. He represents a right wing faction of Catholics who will eventually need to offshoot.
