Or maybe he does. Maybe you’re out of touch and this kicker is just representing modern Catholicism. A lot of people are returning to some imagined base, “fundamentalist” Catholicism in recent years. It’s most likely a response to, like, their neighbors’ kid coming out as non-binary or some dumb sht and it freaks them out and they want to return to simpler times. Like I said earlier, there is also a lot of push back to the Pope in American Catholic circles, too. He’s viewed as too liberal.

Simpler times when "let's make pretend there are no gay people, or trans people,  or that human beings have sex, or that some human beings rape and abuse others even if they are clergy, or that women are incapable of leadership, were how it went . those simple old times.[/quote]
