Wake forest--not sure you could get whiter or preppier

You realize Wake is in a confederate state… defeats your argument.

My son loves this scene so he was in heaven. My daughter was turned off. the wealth was crazy-so many designer purses and $300 sneakers on the moms on the tour and on girls walking around. My kids attend the Cathedral schools so we're no strangers to wealth or preppiness but this was next level. Am I missing something? We literally saw ONE south Asian girl the entire day and she was prepped out (or as my daughter said "white-washed"). Was everyone else hiding in their dorms?

Saaaaay, visit Howard U. and tell us about the diversity there.

My two cents: people pay a lot of money to wrap their snowflakes in a preppy bubble at WF. I think that’s weird.

That’s more a commentary on your circle than Wake. My left leaning daughter is very happy there.

You left out something. I'll fill in the missing word for you: My white, left leaning daughter is very happy there.

As her friends from high school who are not white also attending. From Baltimore, a majority black city. Imagine that.

Which prep school did she go to? And did she live in Roland Park?

I’m not providing any more identifiable details because it simply isn’t relevant.

No need.

I’m very familiar with both Baltimore and WF. Your post made it sound like someone from an inner city public school made it to WF. The reality is an affluent student from an affluent neighborhood (e.g. Roland Park) from a Catholic prep school made it to WF. And she probably blended in with the other affluent preppy students on campus.

LOL. You really can't get an more old-money, preppy than the Baltimore private schools. These kids are the WF poster children.

I'm not sure why a few people on here are so hell-bent on proving that Wake is something that it's not. White, wealthy, academically rigorous yet fun is what they're selling and what so many kids are interested in buying.

The Baltimore private schools are as diverse if not more than the dc schools. And I did nothing of the sort. I said my dd had black classmates that were happy at Wake Forest, even coming from a majority black city. All of that is true.

Plural by the way, I am not talking about one student. I personally know of half a dozen black students that currently attend or recently graduated from Wake.

It’s not a friends and family circle, pp.

My work provides a big network, and there’s a lot of interesting observations about affluent whites sending their kids south to affluent white bubbles.

I’m glad your kid is enjoying it.

But the thread is more about how odd some parents and students find a campus with a rich, white preppy vibe.

Ftr, I’m a bleeding heart liberal.

It’s not an affluent white bubble, how quick you are to discount a third of the student body.

Eh, at least some of the 7.5% Latinos probably appear white, rich, and preppy.

That leaves roughly 12.5% black and Asian plus 3+% who identify as mixed.

So, not a lot of noticeable diversity.

Wow, you are a weirdo. When the facts don’t agree with your perceptions, invent some new ones.

?

ICYMI: many Latinos are white.

Have you ever filled out paperwork? I’m non-Hispanic Caucasian…as compared with the Hispanic caucasians. That’s how demographics work because…Latino is an ethnicity, not a skin color.

This post is about optics.

The vibe at WF is rich, white preppies.

Using Latino numbers to bolster diversity is a stretch since most Latinos are…white.

Sweetie, every college puts students of Hispanic heritage in their own category and considers them a group that adds diversity, and an underrepresented minority. You apparently have an issue with the entire system because you think they look white. That’s your issue and has no bearing on the actual diversity of any particular college.

Bless your heart.

I know how demographics work.

Latinos bring diversity on paper, but not always in appearance (because Latino is an ethnicity not a skin color). And this thread is about what the op saw…not stats on paper.

Anyone who has ever set foot on campus knows that WF appears rich, white, and preppy.

OP here. I literally can't see how this is true. We saw next to no-one who wasn't country club style white people.

You are entitled. A lot of people can't afford campus tours. We followed the advice of the Wapo college writer who said apply first then tour. We toured only where DC was accepted (large universities where they don't follow interest). in sharp contrast, his classmate's parents toured every single Ivy plus some. Friend did not get into any of those schools. Tens of thousands of dollars invested into two parents and child traveling and all gone.

Actually op asked a question and was directed to Wake’s common data set, that states that only 65 percent of Wake students are Caucasian white.

You, who is likely op, keeps returning to claim Hispanics aren’t an under represented minority because they look white. All this does is make you personally look prejudiced. About as good a look as describing a south Asian student dressed “preppy” as white washed. Please keep exposing yourself as the bigot you are.

Kids are ignorant, even at NCS. I doubt she even knows where the Mason-Dixon line actually is.

Someone is trolling. There is an almost identical "we toured and everyone was white" rabble rouser going on about U. of Richmond. Ignore. https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/15/1160196.page#25929925
