University of Richmond - thoughts - academic and social

DD wanted to transfer after 1st year but stuck it out and things have greatly improved. Social scene can be a challenge, lots of cliques, lots of drinking, kids who know each other from high school - tons from NY, NJ. Major drag when you come to college looking for a fresh start. The horrid beast of a roommate didn’t help but that can happen anywhere, not just at UR.

I've been to a lot of college tours and every single one starts out with a slide about how much they love love love diversity and they want more of it. (Then you look around the room and everyone in the tour is white or Asian.) Wonder what it was about Richmond that made you think their obligatory "we love diversity" shtich was more fake than anywhere else.

Only 60% white. You might not want to say that again. Perhaps only white could afford to go to the college tour. https://www.richmond.edu/about/consumer-info/diversity.html

PP here. To clarify, my kid is Black. That's what matters to us. Richmond the CITY is 60% Black. State of Virginia is 20-something.

My kid spoke off the record with a couple of students who don't work for Admissions. One said it was sometimes like "Get Out" the movie socially. IYKYK Another said admin & faculty assume they're FG/LI and say awkward stuff.

All praised academics and were confident about postgraduate opportunities. Most said aid helped justify staying. Aid was not relevant for us.

Kid got in EA and was academically excited. But undergraduate social scene was giving plantation vibes."

OP asked for opinions. I'm sure others have completely different experiences.

Our 2nd child with similar interests and better academics is skipping it.

This is the same thread as the PP who says they toured at Wake and everyone there was white. This racism is getting old. A lot of URM, first generations can't afford to tour --- but people are trolling to bash schools.

Went to a wedding there once - great college town.

Seems someone didn’t get into Wake or Richmond last year, and has some free time on their hands.

Are you trying to prove my point? The PP said Richmond was somehow racist and their commitment to diversity seemed fake in some way, but I sure didn’t see it when I was there.

As for URMs being unable to go on college tours, waah waah waah cry me a river.

Our tour guide there was a white woman from a Southern CA public school. I asked if she knew how many kids came from private high schools vs public - she seemed to indicate that it felt like there were a lot from privates. And she said it has been a transition to get used to such small class size but it was one of the things she has come to love about UR.

It's interesting that people have mentioned a strong greek system -- she did not seem to indicate that it was a larger part, in her experience.

Do the fraternities and sororities have houses off campus? Host parties? It seems like you'd need a car to get anywhere off campus, like these parties but the guide did say a lot of kids did have cars there even as freshman.

Anyone know more about the social scene?

The point as to 60% white was to use statistics to prove that OP (claiming only whites on tour - same as the troll on the Wake Forest page) is wrong, lying or trying to stir the pot. U of Richmond has the same demographics as all the other privates. There's no story here as there is no story about Wake Forest. People are pot-stirring at this time of year or trying to get even with institutions that didn't accept their kids. If someone says something histrionic and the data says otherwise, follow the data or do your own research.

I'm sorry - but again, how do you know it's a rich kid school then? What's your def of "rich kid."

The only kids I know that are there or have gone there are public HS kids, and one was even ROTC there. I mean, I haven't ever seen their family bank statements, but I don't think their families are multimillionaires based on their parents' jobs, where they live, and where their kids went to HS.

Well, looking at this data from the New York Times, looks like Richmond is no more or less of a rich kids college than any other top 50 college...
