Metropolitan DC Local Politics
| It's assessed at waaay more than the parkland that is next to it and way less than the apartments. My guess is that the assessment has to do with zoning and what can be put on the land. Also, that's just the land value. The overall assessed value is over a million. |
I'm not a tax lawyer, but I do know this response is incorrect. The land around PG Pool is owned by MNCPPC and WSSC, both government entities. Comparing land value assessments is the best comparison, besides comparing these for government-owned properties. Why are PG Pool people always trying to deflect legit questions about their "PRIVATE" pool? Just pay your taxes. This isn't about whether your pool is racist, your long waitlist, community relations, or if your pool community is inclusive. |
| I was comparing land value assessments to adjacent properties and speculating why the rates were so Carly different. I wasn’t justifying anything. I was trying to figure out why they’re different. |
DP here. I know, but your speculation is clearly a misrepresentation. Comparing land values owned by MNCPPC with a commercially zoned property is just not the same thing. My guess is the PG Pool had low assessments for decades (maybe this was tied to the initial sale for like $10 to open a segregated pool in the first place? who really knows). Nobody flagged this mistake for decades, I bet. Commercial properties aren't eligible for the Homestead Tax credit, so the State can easily jack up this assessment. I'm sure the State would correct this error when notified. |

Sheesh. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. Sure, get the assessment audited. Make the pool pay more taxes. This will drive up the price of membership, making it less accessible to poor families, more wealthy and more white. Which is exactly what the neighbors in Mt Rainier want.
Great idea! </s> |

All private pools in MD and VA have the same racist history. When DC and other jurisdictions desegregated public pools, white people fled to the suburbs and established whites-only pools.
I don’t know who has an axe to grind with PGP for continuing to single this pool out. |
No, raising assessments will allow Mount Rainier and PG County to collect it's fair share of taxes so they can provide for the less fortunate in our community. Your response sounds like self-serving, woke-washing. Not everyone wants to join PG Pool, but most everyone in MtR wants paved streets, parks, and improved schools. How hard is it to pay your fair share? Sheesh! |
Why doesn’t PG county have sufficient pools for its own residents? I live in Langdon and our DC public pool is full of MD kids. I doubt getting more money out of PG pool is going to solve PG’s problems with schools and roads. |

Wow. This really angers me. If anyone wants to report this, here’s the person that seems responsible for reviewing these errors:

Maybe if private pools like PG Pool paid its fair share of taxes, the county would have $ to build more pools. |
Yeah, I wouldn’t hold your breath. |
I was actually sympathetic toward the PG Pool, but responses like the above arereally off-putting to me. I for one will be calling the PG County Supervisor of Assessments tomorrow to raise questions about assessments at 3301 Buchanan St. I'm sure other mounties will too given responses in this thread. This is really gross. |
I think you are extremely naive if you think getting a few thousand extra bucks out of the PG pool every year is going to make life better for Mt Rainier residents who want access to affordable or free places to swim. Instead you guys will continue to come over the border for DC pools and schools. Don’t get me started on the fairness of hundreds of PG families scamming DC schools. |
DP. Again, this is not about what PG County appropriations of tax dollars. It's not about access to your private swimming pool. It's no about pools in DC. It's also not about student residency fraud. It's about paying your taxes. By my estimate, PG Pool should be paying 3x more taxes than it does now. Also, your comments about PGC are offensive. I'm calling PG County's Assessment office as a result, too. |
You say this as if I’m going to be upset. I don’t know anything about the PG pools tax situation and don’t really care. It sucks that your area doesn’t provide good facilities for residents. Having lived in DC for 50+ years, I can empathize. |
