Really? Seems like an unfunded burden on those border towns. Sanctuary cities argued they don’t work with ICE because they are not funded to do so. Seemingly both places are using the same arguements. |
Why aren't you going to address that comment? Border Patrol agents nab a dozen people on terror watchlist at southern border in August Border Patrol have now encountered 78 individuals on terror watchlist this fiscal year alone https://www.foxnews.com/politics/border-patrol-agents-nab-dozen-suspected-terrorists-southern-border-august |
First of all, drugs have been trafficked across the border since the days of the war on drugs with Reagan. You might be really young to not remember it. The military went after drug kingpins who were sending massive amounts of drugs across the border. Secondly, yes, we are seeing in raw numbers, more and more people crossing the border. But there are also more people in general all over the world. 1986 saw close to the same amount of apprehensions at the border as 2021, but the global population as a whole was a lot smaller in '86 compared to '21. So, the rate of illegal border crossings over the years has probably not changed or has gone down a bit. Also, in case you are really young, Reagan was POTUS in 86.
https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/rising-border-encounters-in-2021 Third, this is exactly the reason why global conflicts impact our national security. For example, we are seeing refugees from Ukraine and Russia trying to cross the southern border due to the conflict there. Today, the largest population of illegal border crossings are Venezuelans. Another reason why the US has a vested interest in stability in the Americas. Rs used to understand this. It's also interesting that Rs were fine with giving Cubans refugee status as soon as their feet hit US soil, but not so with Venezuelans. Marc Rubio's own grandfather was an illegal immigrant who was ordered to be deported, but the deportation ordered was not enforced. Rubio's grandfather eventually was given residency status. But, now here's Rubio, supporting Desantis migrant trafficking. "Fine for me, but not fine for thee". I am not for open borders. I do think we need to do more at the border, but I also think right wing media is making the issue larger than previous years, like in '86 when Reagan was POTUS, and when I was a R back then. And both Reagan and Bush giving amnesty probably encouraged more illegal immigrants to come here, even as the Obama administration tried to discourage them by taking out ads down south telling people not to come. |
Sure there have been border crossings of questionable legality for decades. But volume matters. Today's volume is simply unprecedented and has become unmanageable. Kind of like Walgreen's has always had low levels of shoplifting in SF for decades. But it reached such volumes over the past years that Walgreens shut down dozens of stores there. |
Sorry..... I just can't take anyone seriously who makes excuses for the absolute disaster that our southern border has become. It is not "global conflicts." And, while the amnesty granted by Reagan proved to be a huge mistake (Dems didn't keep their side of the deal), it is not what is causing our current crisis. These people coming probably don't even know who Reagan is. Our current crisis is the result of Biden's campaign rhetoric, his campaign promises, and the actions he took on Day 1 of his presidency sending a loud and clear message that his administration had no intention of enforcing our border laws. Period. |
Oh FFS. It’s a database with literally one million names of people for which the US givernment asserts there is a reasonable suspicion that the person has some vague connection to “terrorist activity” including travel or religious or ethnic affiliations. It’s “suspected terrorist” panic porn for morons. |
I have read on here - repeatedly - that people believe that people on this list should be on the no-fly list. So, which is it.... a database with questionable entries, or a list of people to worry about? |
The quality reporting we’ve come to expect from Fox. It reports there were 12 “encounters” in August with someone whose name matched someone in the watchlist. No reporting that this actually was the same person. No reporting of any arrest having been made. Why? Because there was no probable cause the person encountered has committed any crime whatsoever. Security theater at its finest. |
The NTDB “watchlist” is not the same thing as the TSA “no fly” or screening “selectee” lists. All represent government overreach in the name of national security that raise serious civil liberties concerns but everybody was cool with it when it was principally used to target Muslims. |
It’s possible the same person was “encountered” in each of the 12 reported instances. Fox News playing fast and loose with the facts as usual. |
I think you have comprehension issues. I make no excuses. I am showing you facts (see graph). But, I know that some people these days don't like to look at facts. It's an inconvenient truth. I dislike Biden, but Trump is a crazy F*er who is dangerous to our democracy. That's why Biden won. Maybe Rs should learn their lesson and not put up a crazy, conspiracy supporting F*er up as their candidate. |
They have the bad luck of geography. And no immigration authority. And DeSantis was not sending FLA immigrants but going to TX and lying to them and then sending them elsewhere. So, yeah, not the same thing. |
I literally don't care. If Red States hate the government so much, then they can give back federal money. Especially if not using it for its intended purpose. You're sending them elsewhere, you lose the money. |
GWB also provided amnesty, and at one point, congress was controlled by Rs. They had the chance then to fix immigration issues. But, they didn't. But sure, it's all the Dems fault. I'm sure that makes you feel better.
|
But they know that several past POTUS have provided amnesty, including a few R ones. They know that they can get amnesty. That is the point. They don't care who the POTUS is. |
