NYC mayor declares 'emergency' due to migrants

I just can't take anyone seriously who makes excuses for the absolute disaster that our southern border has become.
It is not "global conflicts." And, while the amnesty granted by Reagan proved to be a huge mistake (Dems didn't keep their side of the deal), it is not what is causing our current crisis. These people coming probably don't even know who Reagan is.

Our current crisis is the result of Biden's campaign rhetoric, his campaign promises, and the actions he took on Day 1 of his presidency sending a loud and clear message that his administration had no intention of enforcing our border laws. Period.

But they know that several past POTUS have provided amnesty, including a few R ones. They know that they can get amnesty. That is the point. They don't care who the POTUS is.

They know what Biden and Harris have said. They know the actions that Biden has taken.
They know that he has essentially welcomed them, encouraged them to enter illegally, and they know there will be no ramifications for doing so. In fact, they know that Biden-Harris will reward them for their efforts.
Don't take my word for it. The migrants themselves have said they are coming now because Biden is president. And, the border agents have said our current crisis is the worst they have ever seen it.
This is a dereliction of duty plain and simple.

Maybe they come because Abbott and DeSantis are misleading them with offers of free transportation to places that will give them assistance and job opportunities.

they don't really care who's POTUS. They just know from word of mouth, so and so's cousin/friend/brother/uncle.. that the US has provided amnesty from way back. That's why even under Trump's rule there were illegal immigrants still trying to cross the border. The number we see is border "apprehensions". All Trump did was make the illegal immigrants go under ground. We have zero clue exactly how many illegal immigrants are actually coming across the border. Additionally, the majority of illegal immigrants now are visa overstays. What is the Rs solution to that?

The border agents there today are probably in their 30s, maybe 40s, and they were either babies or not even born when during Reagan's reign, there was a huge uptick in border apprehensions (see graph).

I used to be a R a very long time ago (Reagan/Bush). I stopped being a R during GWB because I realized that the R party basically lies a sh1t ton to people because they think people are stupid. And that attitude has continued to this day, especially under Trump.

I am now an Independent.

We do need better border security, but my point is that this has always been an issue (again, see graph). Both parties have neglected the immigration and border issues. I swear, sometimes I think the R leadership purposefully ignores doing anything about immigration issues so that they can use it as a cudgel against the Dem party. Rs these days are about obstruction, not about coming up with real viable solutions. The wall was not a viable solution, btw. It was an expensive boon doggle.

I'll just keep repeating: if you want to stop illegal immigration, kill the demand. Why do they come here? Because they know someone will give them a job. Many of them work in construction, agriculture and hospitality -- an industry that is heavily R leaning. We need to increase the penalty for hiring illegal immigrants. The penalty we have now is a drop in the bucket. It doesn't deter the companies enough to not hire them. There's a lot of money to be made on hiring cheap labor, and not that much deterrent, so the companies do it.

Kill the demand. You'll see supply dry up. Until then, a wall won't stop desperate people.

I'm convinced that the migrant caravan was financed and started by right wing nujobs.

Sure there have been border crossings of questionable legality for decades. But volume matters. Today's volume is simply unprecedented and has become unmanageable. Kind of like Walgreen's has always had low levels of shoplifting in SF for decades. But it reached such volumes over the past years that Walgreens shut down dozens of stores there.

Exactly this.

I was in Loudoun County today and it is one big "Now Hiring" sign. Everything from retail, to restaurants, to construction sites, to churches and schools. There is even a sign at Loudoun Water "looking for chemists."

Everyone I saw working today is Hispanic or Middle Eastern. We need more busloads of people who are willing to do the work that Americans cannot do.

Do you think the immigrants being dropped off in NYC are chemists? Teachers?

Really? Seems like an unfunded burden on those border towns. Sanctuary cities argued they don’t work with ICE because they are not funded to do so. Seemingly both places are using the same arguements.

I literally don't care. If Red States hate the government so much, then they can give back federal money. Especially if not using it for its intended purpose. You're sending them elsewhere, you lose the money.

If they’re not working with ICE, then they should live with the financial burden.

Again — neither side is cooperating g. It gets people stirred up just like the want at election time.

because a bunch were dumped on them by another state who had no authority to do that. Those governors lied to the people and were basically human traffickers for a political stunt.

But weren’t those unlawful immigrants dumped in those other states by a federal govt that isn’t enforcing security at the border because doing so is unpopular with the political class in those states now doing the complaining?

So you think small, under resourced towns in rural Texas should absorb the massive costs of dealing with a huge influx of people who shouldn’t be here, but draw the line when a few hundred show up in NYC?

Seriously- how do you defend that?

I'm not defending anything, but last I checked TX, FL, and NY are part of the US, and the federal government has the authority to deal with illegal immigrants, not a governor who is looking to score political points and looking to run for POTUS in two years.

Also, Desantis had ZERO authority to ship illegal immigrants from TX, a state he has ZERO jurisdiction in. So again, he's basically a human trafficker. We should put him in prison.

Yes, the federal government has the authority.... but when the federal government shirks that authority, the states most heavily impacted need to take action.

And, are you equally as outraged about the mayor of El Paso (D) busing migrants to NYC?

DeSantis should be awarded a medal for what he did. The Democrats are FINALLY talking about the crisis at the border. That is a miracle.

No it’s not up to the states. Sorry not how it works. When Texas leaves can you join them?

The federal government should help any place that has a lot of refugees, but new Central American and South American refugees are not actually visible in New York and don’t seem to have any noticeable effect on quality of life in New York. If anything, New York has done a good job of getting things back under control in the past year.

Was just in NYC and Hispanic women with multiple toddlers and a baby were sitting on the sidewalk or walking around near Time Square. It is very visible and upsetting.

Not sure how you can make this statement in all seriousness.

Gov. Kathy Hochul ripped Mayor Eric Adams’ handling of the Big Apple’s out-of-control migrant crisis, accusing his administration late Tuesday of being slow to act and ignoring repeated offers of state-paid assistance.

The harsh — and previously unseen — public criticism of the city’s migrant response was laid bare in a scathing, 12-page letter from Hochul’s lawyer Tuesday night in the wake of the mayor’s persistent cries for extra state and federal help battling the escalating crisis.
