Phillip was shown as being pretty snarky and dismissive of Kate when she first started working at the school. Granted, I now see we're supposed to realized his "crusty" exterior was just a layer of protection over the traumatic loss of his wife, but still. As for the first wife, couldn't the writers simply have said she left him due to the IVF issue - and not that she was then hit by a drunk driver? Honestly, not everything has to be so tragic and dramatic.

OMG, so true! Didn't Coco Chanel famously advise to get fully dressed to go out, then take off one piece of jewelry? This Is Us writers should write their scripts, then go back and remove one tragic event.

Well said! This is the glaring problem that is never to be spoken about and I'm sick of it. I would have had so much more respect for the writers (and the actress) if they had shown her going on a gastric bypass journey. I don't think they even needed to go so far as that. The fact that a pregnant woman chose Kate to adopt her daughter just seemed sooo unrealistic to me. The mobility issues, energy level, life expectancy of morbid obesity, plus Kate was already 40, not college educated. Also, wasn't Toby unemployed by that point? I understand there was an emotional connection with the birth mother, but that's a lot to overlook.

I disagree Kate and Phillip don’t have chemistry, although I would have liked to seen more of the build-up to that first date. Maybe that’s to come. Phillip’s story of his first wife was a kick in the stomach. Yes, if I were to meet them out I’d probably think they were a bit of an attractiveness mismatch, but we had the beauty (female) and the beast (male) b.s. shoved down our throats so long, I’m ok with this.

I really hope we get the Kate/Sophie friendship reconnection story played out.

So it’s gotta be Sophie, right? I’m a Cassidy fan but if she stays in the picture as a close friend and business colleague I’m cool with that. I just don’t particularly like the Sophie actress. In anything she’s done.

Chris Sullivan blew me away in this episode. This episode was the payoff of a long-alluded to issue that Toby felt alienated in the Pearson family (remember that one episode where Beth, Toby and Miguel went to a bar and talked about how much they felt like outsiders sometimes?) and was very cognizant of the lingering effects of Jack on his wife. The writers laid the groundwork for this divorce almost as soon as they got together in season one.

When was that?

The first marriage counseling session. Kate starts off a sentence saying “Chris…” I had to watch it a couple times but I thought it was a funny goof they left in.

Toby and Kate had a reason to get together, at least, with the weight loss being the catalyst. Kate and Phillip getting together is just out of the blue and unrealistic.

I live in Los Angeles with a neurotypical child and one with special needs and I found it very unrealistic that she was unwilling to move to San Francisco with Toby. She would not be able to live in that house and only work part-time as a teacher’s aide without a substantial second income. She was being selfish, plain and simple. It was completely unrealistic that Toby could take job paying much less and then afford two houses even if Kate took a full time job. Teachers don’t make that much at these schools.

Agree, and she's not a certified teacher, so making a small salary. Does she even have a college degree?

Didn’t we see a graduation a few seasons ago? Was it community college?

Have you all watched the whole show? There has been TONS of storyline on this. It was Kate’s entire plot for like two years. She and Toby met at a meeting for people with disordered eating.

But she has not dropped any weight and nobody has had that conversation with her that she will die and leave her children without a mother if she doesn’t lose it. It is the elephant in the room.

It hasn’t been dropped. If anything, it has been the catalyst of the past season or two. Toby lost weight and got successful and Kate didn’t lose any weight. In all of the recent episodes, it seems like Kate is more upset because of this and is resentful.

Also, this is not a "New prediction!" It was discussed like 3 pages ago. I understand people aren't going to read all 89 pages of this thread, but have some courtesy and sense and read the last 5 or so.

Kate is not going to lose weight. It is clear that for some of you, that is the only way Kate could be interesting or appealing to you, so please, give up on her. Give up on her storyline. Nothing about a woman who has a life beyond her weight is going to make sense to you.

Just enjoy the way Kevin went from sitcom heartthrob to Serious Actor to barely employable in a matter of five years. Or think about how his sobriety is no longer a source of concern. Think about how Randall's express rise in politics makes total sense. Think about how Beth's career change to something in the arts was smooth and without any apparent financial hit.

This maudlin, ridiculous show should have been over a while ago. I can’t believe there are this many people who just love being extra depressed weekly. I even saw a headline about how Mandy Moore threw up when she saw what was going to happen in the final scripts. Gee, sound great. Sign me up.

Yes, it started with the weight as a plot point and then when the showrunners realized the actress couldn’t or wouldn’t lose weight they just dropped the whole thing cold. As if it wouldn’t be considered a worse problem every year she ages. It’s simply not realistic in any way. Chrissy Metz is not just over weight or even obese, she is beyond even that. Yet she and her sour personality have no issues attracting men, adopting babies, or any number of other things that simply do not ring true with reality.
