I just saw the most horrifying thing on TV. (At 4:00 on nbc4).
There was a big disclaimer stating "NBC4 is required by federal law to air the following campaign ad without modification, it has images that are graphic and disturbing and may be especially disturbing to children" It then showed a campaign ad for "Missy Smith" who is evidently running for Congress on an anti-abortion platform. The ad was truly graphic and horrifying (multiple pictures of aborted fetuses). I was almost sick. Regardless of where you stand on the abortion issue, this seems like a completely horrifying ad, and one that should never EVER be shown on daytime TV. I'm really p'oed at NBC4, because I cannot for the life of me believe that just because this nutball is running for Congress than they HAVE to show whatever ad she puts together. And I'm p'oed that they're throwing up their hands with this legal disclaimer and saying essentially "sorry, we HAD to do it!" I don't know the law in this area, but I can't imagine that campaign and First Amendment law doesn't allow for some editing here. If Ms. Smith were running on a pro-pornography platform, I can't imagine that NBC4 would have to air that ad. Where are NBC4 lawyers and where the heck did they get their law degrees? Did anyone else see it? Does anyone really know the law on this? (And I mean REALLY know the law on this). Please don't pop on here with your mechanical science degree and spout off about how if they show her competitor's ad, they have to show hers... or some junk like that. I'm certain this issue is more complex than that... |

I did not see it, but I am outraged enough based on your post. Hope that helps.
And who runs for any official position with the name "Missy?" |
| That's awful. I want to know too. |
|
Yes, apparently the law is on Ms. Smith's side. I guess if a pro-pornography candidate were to run, the same law would apply. For those interested, the ad and a schedule of when it will be shown is available here:
http://www.missysmith2010.com/ Avoid Fox tonight if you don't want to see it. Monday, it will be on during most of the evening news programs. |
| WOW. I just hope the voters see her for the lunatic she truly is. Not because he opposed abortion but for this horrific campaign ads. |
She is running against Eleanor Holmes Norton. She has less chance of winning than I do and I'm not even running. |
| Why are you so pissed at NBC? Do you really think they wanted to show that ad? That nut-so candidate is the real problem here. |
| Wow... I am TOTALLY prolife, and am also completely appalled by these advertisements. I would HATE to have my child see this while we're watching a regular television show... yikes! |
| It's true -- they are compelled to show it, unfortunately. |
| My GRANDMOTHER and I were were watching television and this came on. I was gagging, she was crying, and then we sat there in disbelief that we really just saw that in the middle of TMZ. |
| I think the first time I saw it, it didn't have a disclaimer. My daughter was in the room! |
| I saw it too and was horrified. Fortunately, it was late at night and my kids were all asleep. |

bad ad or not, it's reality....
and i'm not even against abortion. |
| It's totally ridiculous. I was horrified and couldn't even watch it long enough to figure out what she was saying or who she was. It fails on so many levels. Yes we are talking about it but not in a positive way. It's horrific. I cannot believe it is on tv. |
| The sad thing is... that on the schedule that was on a PP's link, there were about 25 different airtimes, and only TWO out of all of them were later than 8 pm. Which is my daughter's bedtime. Awesome. I'm glad I saw that because I know what I will make sure is not on television when my daughter is in the room, so thank you for sharing. |
