Has your college freshman dated at all this year?

Anonymous
My freshman recently came home for spring break. She told me she hasn’t dated anyone at all. No one has asked her out, no hookups, not even really guys chatting with her. As far as I know she also hasn’t asked any guys out herself. She feels kind of sad about all of it. Is it normal now for college students to basically live like they are in a convent? She studies a lot and spends most of her time with her female friends. They go out together to dinner, concerts, and games, and seem to have a nice time. But from what she says, her friends are having the same experience — not much or anything happening with guys. This feels very different from when I was in college. I’m curious what your freshman’s experience has been like.

DS doesn't share a lot, but recently admitted he had a casual girlfriend. He is in a fraternity, which probably helps.

Your kid tells you about their hookups?

This generation is just as wild, if not more, than ours was. Even the high schoolers are wild. I don’t think your child’s experience is the norm. But it could depend on the school, where is she at?

Rare is the 'dating'. It is hook-up city.

Eh, I’m not so sure.

I know tons of single young people who don’t seem to date.

Disturbing to the max which is why we don't use it.

Do the hookups originate from parties? I feel like my kid can't figure out the scene. I don't think she's looking for hook-ups but she doesn't even talk to boys long enough (or ever) for anyone to proposition her. How does everyone actually meet to "hook-up?" Pls forgive these really strange questions. I would never breathe a word of this to my student. Just trying to understand the scene or how kids relate today. I did not live at school for most of college and it was a million years ago.

Most colleges are 60:40 female:male so it's a tough "market" out there for women.
