University choice and state political climate

Anonymous
The IU v. UMich thread got me thinking more about state politics and college choice. My senior has Tulane (Louisiana) and Wake Forest (NC) on her list - along with many schools in New England. Does the state/state political climate factor into your son/daughter's decision about where to attend?

No.

Yes. Though more with state schools than privates.

After all the Kirk stuff, more cognizant than ever.

Yes. My child only considered California, Maryland, and northeast states.

+1 Look at what's been going on at UNC Wilmington this week

Yes, it does.

We are multi-ethnic foreigners living in the US and my kids are dual citizens. I would rather not send them to a conservative state, even if the university is in a liberal city in that state, because it takes away a layer of protection. The state can try to impose restrictions on their cities.

My oldest is at GWU in DC. There are so many college choices, here and abroad, that I am not worried about curtailing some of their options by declining to look at conservative states. Money is not a factor.

We are not actually very left-leaning, but we are worried about racism and xenophobia traveling in and out of the university.

Nope

Yes. So many great schools in blue states, DC had no interest in south or bible belt.

No, that is just ignorant.

Sorry, some of us have lived experience of discrimination in those states. I'm glad you did not, but please do not assume we all look like you or present in the same way.

For all of the people who are 100% opposed to this concept, please stop seeing the world in black and white. There are some people here who are saying it is a deciding factor. But for most, it is just something worth considering.

The world no longer understands nuance. Particularly MAGA people. Say something negative about them, Trump, Kirk, or whatever else and they get so defensive. A sign of intellect is being able to admit weaknesses in the side you support. I can tell you plenty of negatives about my side. But I still think it is much better than the other side.

DD wouldn't look at any schools in red states. I 100% supported her decision.

Yes. Our DD loved Rice after touring last year and had planned to ED it, but since the political climate has worsened, she now says she doesn’t want to live in an open carry state and where abortion is a prosecutable crime. I have worked in Houston and have never felt unsafe there, but it’s her decision; she’s done her research so DH and I don’t feel like we should ignore her feelings when it comes to her own sense of safety

I'm guessing most of those saying No are also MAGA people who whine about the "woke" northeastern schools. Hypocrites.
