That song is so out of place on the album. One theory is she is saying she doesnt regret ruining her friendship with mattt by dating. I dont know if I buy it. Did they have a friendship or a ten year fliration? Maybe she just needed a 12th song for her 12th album?

Oh for God’s sake. That song is about her good friend from HS who died and how she wished she had “ruined the friendship” by seeing if it could have been more. The boy’s mother even commented on it. It has nothing to do with MH and some of you need to move on, already.

Exactly. Taylor is famous for using double meanings, red herrings and mixing up/making up events in her songs so that it won’t be obvious who she is talking about. Only a handful of her closest people who know the details of certain muses and events can decode the clues she leaves. “You taught me a secret language I can’t speak with anyone else.”
She has done it her entire career except on TTPD, where she was obvious and didn’t give a damn.

I know Ruin The Friendship is allegedly about a HS crush who died, I just don’t buy that she is reminiscing about him 15+ years after his funeral and 20 years after she didn’t kiss him at a dance. At the end she sings “And my advice is always answer the question, better that than to ask it all your life.” It relates directly to her song Question ? on Midnights, which is supposed to be for Matty. Also repeating “Should’ve kissed you anyway” multiple times sounds just like “She has a boyfriend anyway.” That, plus the music similarities.

And she clearly isn't writing all of her songs, she obvi has teams of ghostwriters signing NDAs, so I wouldn't read anything into the babble she sings.

You just described yourself. And yes - she does indeed write her own songs either alone or with collaborators (Jack Antonoff, Aaron Dessner, Shellback, Max Martin, Bon Iver, etc.) - and she credits them each and every time.

She does not credit people every single time or she would have credited Michael Jackson and "I Want You Back" for using his ideas for "Wood" on TLOAS.

Antonoff is over her.

Shellback and Martin are likely over her by now. You can hear how she doesn't listen to Martin and Shellback and talks over them if you listen to her voice memos. If you listen to Ariana and Martin working together, you see a whole different level of professionalism and collaboration.

It's fine. She can be mid and still sell out her stadiums. Her core fans will buy anything at this point--even broken TLOAS hairbrushes and lightning bolt necklaces that break.

You keep bringing up her “voice memos.” I have no idea what you’re referencing. But how funny that someone who thinks she’s “mid” and is fixated on baseless, evidence-free claims, knows all about obscure things that most people couldn’t care less about.

You are the very definition of a “core fan,” which must be upsetting for you to acknowledge!

I thought the same thing! I’m actually a pretty big Taylor fan and I have never heard these voice memos lol.

It’s so weird that a non-fan would bother.

It's so weird that a fan would not listen to them...She released them, so why not listen to how she made the song?

What's truly weird is that a self-professed hater would buy the different albums all so that they could listen to her voice memos - don't you think? I haven't bought any of her albums, I simply listen to the songs I like via streaming. And I'd consider myself a fan. How do you explain *your* obsession?

I find it interesting to hear about how people develop songs. I watched the entire Beatles documentary. That’s how I learned Paul is a jerk and John had major issues.

Previously, I believed Tay was this amazing songwriter. Once I listened to the memos, I learned she interrupts the producers she hired, can’t sing on key, and offers lame lyrics. She was also seeking praise from her producers for her bad ideas.

Ariana, in a video of her working with Martin, can do MUCH more with her voice and one can see her talent. I do t even like her or listen to her music, but I can see she is an excellent singer.

Nice try anyway with attacking me for “buying” albums with her voice memos.
That doesn’t make for much of an argument in your favor. And I also did not buy the albums with the memos.

You… just found out about the Beatles and their imperfections? Are you very young?

Am I supposed to be insulted by this question? 😂😂

I’ll just go put Band Aids on my wounds now. 😆

Hope you one day find out about Taylor.

It’s pop music. Your first mistake is thinking any of it’s actually deep. So, yes, you are extremely young and naive.

What?

I’m buried under 42 album variations. Did you say something?

Pop music absolutely can be “deep”. 99 red balloons, slide by the googoo dolls is about abortion, pumped up kicks by the band of the same name, blackbird by the beetles is about black freedom, Yellow taxi “pave paradise and put up a parking lot.’
These, I name in about 30 seconds.
Just because Taylor’s pop music isn’t that deep, doesn’t mean all pop music isn’t deep.

DP. You obviously haven’t listened to all of her music.
Seven - about child abuse
Epiphany - war
The Man - gender inequality
You Need to Calm Down - LGBTQ
The Last Great American Women - society’s judgement of unconventional women

You have one of the song titles wrong, which is funny because you are accusing the other poster of not listening to all the songs.

It’s “Dynasty” and not “Woman.”

You are correct, I made a mistake while typing too fast. That clearly negates everything else I was saying. Thanks for the correction.

That's our resident hater for you. She intimately studies all things Taylor Swift so that she can come here and write her detailed screeds about how much she hates her.

Honestly, this album is a 0/10.

Legitimately one of the worst albums I have ever listened to. Zero thought-provoking songs or lyrics.

Bring a tiny violin to a knife fight? Girl boss too close to the sun? Like a toy chihuahua barking at me from a tiny purse?

Did she use AI to write these corny songs? It’s like she’s making a mockery of her rabid fanbase. Of course it sells and charts but so do Eminem albums and songs and he’s been washed up for like 15 years.

+1. The song is not about a boy in high school, or at least not just about that. Jeff Lang didn’t have a brother, and in the first verse Taylor sings, “Watching the game from your brother’s Jeep.”

Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m not even familiar with half her music. I’d miserably fail any trivia game about her music or her life.

But I know mean girls and bullies when I see them. Healthy, mature adults don’t spend any time talking about, thinking about, or learning about things and people I don’t like or think are awful.

I don’t understand why people expect Taylor to take absolutely no liberty with her story telling. I don’t think we hold any other artists to this kind of standard. Have you ever seen any movie based on a true story?

It can be loosely based on events. I don’t why we think every word of the song has to be true. She is capturing a feeling of loss and regret about a high school crush. It’s possible that 50 Cent never played at the prom. Gasp. Heck, it’s possible that she and the Jeff were never even at prom together. She is just telling a story and using elements people will recognize. A high school football game, a musician that was popular during her high school years, a dance that most people associate with high school .

It is quite possible we will find out that Jeff and she in fact did not have second period together. And that’s OK. Maybe it was a friend’s jeep, but it doesn’t sound quite as good in the song. It doesn’t all have to be factually correct, it is art.

So healthy, mature adults can only think about things you like? That is a wacko sentence. I’m sure you “mistyped” but you should really read that because what you wrote says healthy mature people are only allowed to think and learn about things you like under your definition.

Who are you the king?

Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m not even familiar with half her music. I’d miserably fail any trivia game about her music or her life.

But I know mean girls and bullies when I see them. Healthy, mature adults don’t spend any time talking about, thinking about, or learning about things and people I don’t like or think are awful.

You don’t like her because she sees you too.

So healthy, mature adults can only think about things you like? That is a wacko sentence. I’m sure you “mistyped” but you should really read that because what you wrote says healthy mature people are only allowed to think and learn about things you like under your definition.

Who are you the king?

Obviously a typo. Most of us are on our phones. But you’re doing the same thing over that typo as you do with TS. So it tracks. I hope you one day like yourself and find pleasure in something positive.

Not an obvious typo at all. You went from speaking for “all healthy mature people” to talking about your personal opinions. More like a Freudian slip of the fingers.
