The CDC is also working on developing a diagnostic test that it can deploy to states, but with a new virus like this, “it can take three to six weeks,” said Scott Becker, the executive director of the Association of Public Health Laboratories.

5578 cases
131 deaths--all but 6 in Hubei, where Wuhan is located.

So...2% fatalities?

Why is everyone freaking out?

Because if it gets to the same level of infection as the flu that’s 100,000 fatalities.

Out of how many billion people?

We gave a right to be a little paranoid.

Wow so you’re posting from Wuhan or a neighboring province?

Do you think it spreads differently in US?

We don't know how it started in China so how can we compare?

NEW: US flight evacuating hundreds of Americans from #WuhanCoronavirus to Ontario, California now *diverted* to March Air Force Base, says Curt Hagman, Ontario Int'l Airport Commissioner, citing @CDC and @StateDept. Relief on social from some Ontario residents. @CBSNews

Interesting — so either it was the outcry in Ontario CA (not far from lots of population centers like Riverside, Fullerton etc) or someone on the flight has some symptoms making them realize it’s better to go to a controlled setting rather than a commercial airport? Wonder if the quarantine will now be at the Air Force base.

Picture from evacuation flight. It's stopping in Anchorage first for refueling.

^Its been asked here where the 230 would be quarantined — are they just going to fly home and be told to stay there? Response from NBC — there’s temporary housing where they will all be quarantined together away from the public. Now with landing at the military base, makes me think the quarantine will be on base.

From National Geographic:
"
Inspired in part by that case, a team of public health researchers set out to study how random movements about the airplane cabin might change passengers’ probability of infection.

Passengers in window seats have the
lowest likelihood of coming in contact
with an infected person...

...but illnesses are most likely to be
transmitted only to passengers within
one row of the infected person.
Probability of being infected

color codes:
from light green to dark magenta from least to most probability

Light green: Less than 1 percent
Dark green: 5 to 20
Magenta: 80 to 100

The World Health Organization defines contact with an infected person as being seated within two rows of one another.

But people don’t just sit during flights, particularly ones lasting longer than a few hours. They visit the bathroom, stretch their legs, and grab items from the overhead bins. In fact, during the 2003 coronavirus outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), a passenger aboard a flight from Hong Kong to Beijing infected people well outside the WHO’s two-row boundary. The New England Journal of Medicine noted that the WHO criteria “would have missed 45 percent of the patients with SARS.”

Australia plans island quarantine as foreigners leave Wuhan

Hundreds of foreign nationals have been evacuated from the Chinese city of Wuhan, the centre of the coronavirus outbreak, as more deaths and cases were confirmed. Australia plans to quarantine its 600 returning citizens for two weeks on Christmas Island - some 2,000km (1,200 miles) from the mainland.

An expert from the Chinese National Health Commission (NHC) said it could take 10 more days for the outbreak to peak.

When we hear -- OMG we're testing in Maryland or Kansas or NYC or wherever -- and then 2 days go by and there's no news, guess what -- it's because it's negative. If it were positive -- the total count in America would go up -- if 24-48 hrs go by and it hasn't increased, guess what, whatever test you were worrying about it negative.

Sure they don't appear to have a standard protocol that says allow negative results. But they're kind of busy and appear to be relying on state health departments to issue a press release or not . . . in this day and age, they just let it fade out of the media . . . .

Do you REALLY believe we have a China style conspiracy happening here? Someone's aunt at a San Fran hospital says 2 cases but CDC won't add them to the count?? Come on . . . .

As for GMU -- last I heard that kid is self isolated . . . leading me to believe the test was negative but they want to be sure so they want him/her not going anyplace for 14 days at which time they likely test again to make sure he/she is 100% clear (just in case they tested in the early stages, the viral load wasn't high enough but lo and behold a wk later, turns out the kid has it). This could also be why you're not getting definitive negatives . . . the overabundance of caution to make sure the virus isn't developing in the person. Don't think they want to say -- ALL CLEAR and then uh never mind . . . .

No. The CDC website is current as of 1/27. It includes positive, pending, and negative cases.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-in-us.html

Why isn't it current as of today?

It's the same for Virginia. The GMU student's results are listed as pending as of 1/27 and will be updated on Thursday.

I think it’s really odd how they didn’t update this information. I feel like the whole world is watching/waiting and they just “forget” to update? I don’t think so.

. Good point. And the case in Washington state - is the person recovered
