This is really not a useful post. A reddit quote of someone's aunt?

Yes, in Germany they are doing it more locally, and the turnaround is much faster (same day it looks like). They better distribute a test to states/hospitals very soon!

Germany is the size of Texas, so you can drive to the central lab in five minutes from any place.
Okay, maybe not as small and not that fast but it is certainly not a continent type of country like USA.

THIS IS MAJOR!

HERE IS WHY:

Doctors said the copy could be used as "control material" for testing and "will be a game changer for diagnosis".
That could involve an early-diagnosis test which could detect the virus in people who have not displayed symptoms.

So far we only could test the cases after they became symptomatic right???

Coronavirus: Australian scientists first to recreate virus outside China

Scientists in Australia have become the first to recreate the new coronavirus outside of China in what they have called a "significant breakthrough".
The discovery will be shared with the World Health Organization (WHO) in the hope it may help efforts to diagnose and treat the virus.
Scientists in China have also recreated the virus and shared its genome sequence, but not the virus itself.
The outbreak has killed 132 people in China and infected close to 6,000.
There are at least 47 cases confirmed in 16 other countries, including in Thailand, France, the US and Australia. No deaths have been reported outside China.

Researchers at a specialist lab in Melbourne, Australia, said they were able to grow a copy of the virus from an infected patient. The sample was sent to them last Friday.
"We've planned for an incident like this for many, many years and that's really why we were able to get an answer so quickly," said Dr Mike Catton of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity.
Hope of 'game changer'
Doctors said the copy could be used as "control material" for testing and "will be a game changer for diagnosis".
That could involve an early-diagnosis test which could detect the virus in people who have not displayed symptoms.

Chinese authorities have said the virus - like a normal flu - is able to spread during its incubation period.
But the WHO has said it remains unclear whether it is contagious before symptoms appear.

What are viruses? And how do they spread?
"An antibody test will enable us to retrospectively test suspected patients so we can gather a more accurate picture of how widespread the virus is, and consequently, among other things, the true mortality rate," said Dr Catton.
"It will also assist in the assessment of effectiveness of trial vaccines."

Does anyone here know how long would it take to develop the test they are talking about?
How was it in the past epidemics?

Still, another source said the test takes 6-8 hours. The GMU sample was reported days ago.

Aren't you guys being a little paranoid? When we hear -- OMG we're testing in Maryland or Kansas or NYC or wherever -- and then 2 days go by and there's no news, guess what -- it's because it's negative. If it were positive -- the total count in America would go up -- if 24-48 hrs go by and it hasn't increased, guess what, whatever test you were worrying about it negative.

Sure they don't appear to have a standard protocol that says allow negative results. But they're kind of busy and appear to be relying on state health departments to issue a press release or not . . . in this day and age, they just let it fade out of the media . . . .

Do you REALLY believe we have a China style conspiracy happening here? Someone's aunt at a San Fran hospital says 2 cases but CDC won't add them to the count?? Come on . . . .

As for GMU -- last I heard that kid is self isolated . . . leading me to believe the test was negative but they want to be sure so they want him/her not going anyplace for 14 days at which time they likely test again to make sure he/she is 100% clear (just in case they tested in the early stages, the viral load wasn't high enough but lo and behold a wk later, turns out the kid has it). This could also be why you're not getting definitive negatives . . . the overabundance of caution to make sure the virus isn't developing in the person. Don't think they want to say -- ALL CLEAR and then uh never mind . . . .

No. The CDC website is current as of 1/27. It includes positive, pending, and negative cases.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-in-us.html

Why isn't it current as of today?

It's the same for Virginia. The GMU student's results are listed as pending as of 1/27 and will be updated on Thursday.

On the flip side, why exactly they are advertising that someone is being tested for case. How about just do what they
need to do and only announce if it is positive? How about that?

True - but my point was that the testing was done locally in the state of Bavaria - not sent out to a central facility. Similarly, in Canada, they test locally, and then confirm results centrally. Much faster turnaround.

Mason student's results are not back yet. It was announced because rumors on social media were going out of control. (signed Mason affiliate)
