Pls don’t cancel your Kennedy center tickets

Anonymous
I saw on another thread a lot of people saying don’t buy KC because of Trump. Please don’t do this. There are tons and tons of unionized workers employed by the KC in performing roles as well as ticket sellers, stage hands, lighting, etc. Many of the performers currently have contracts for shows that were planned prior to the Trump takeover. If people start cancelling their tickets, it will give the Trunpies an excuse to potentially cancel those contract and then just bring in crap like Kid Rock or potentially bankrupt the KC (maybe paving the way to sell it for real estate?). I hate Trump but no one should boycott unless the unions call for it. Boycotting now is just harming the workers, the arts, and the city’s future artistic heritage.
Thank you.

I'm not cancelling current tix but I'm probably switching to other venues for entertainment.

I will not cancel current tickets but in the future I will not be a patron as long as a known Nazi is on the Board of Trustees.

I really don’t think ticket sales are a factor. The Kennedy Center has long relied on billionaire benefactors. Trump has plenty of billionaires. They can keep it going and put on kid rock or whatever.

I’ll buy tickets again when going there doesn’t make me feel gross and sad any more. No one will notice I was gone. It’s not that big a deal. Everyone feels bad about it but it’s just a petty, ugly thing he did to the community, an extra kick in the shins. It will pass. Probably.

Hard disagree. He can hit up Miriam Adelson.

Those employees are going to feel the pain like every other federal employee (and employee in supporting industries like gov contracting and NGOs). Not sure why you think these particular individuals should be spared the pain. The problem is much bigger than them.

It must crumble. Everyone must turn their backs on him. Don’t support anything from which he’ll use for propaganda purposes.

“Known nazi” is beyond farce and feels like you maaayyyybe need to have someone point out to you what actually Nazis did so that you don’t continue to insult the memories of the 6 million Jews who were brutally tortured and MURDERED under the Nazi regime.

Mean words that result in someone’s hurt feelings or passing laws and drafting policies that you disagree with or even “put lives at risk” (as goes the argument) may well be something to get upset about and protest. That’s all fine.
But you really need to make this its own argument rather than use hyperbolic comparisons to the world’s worst mass atrocities to make your point.
Otherwise you just look like a literal clown.

It won’t crumble though. Even if ticket sales decline, he can just make up for it with donor gifts. The KC will be fine unless he decides to dismantle it, but I don’t think he will. He just wants all the programming decisions to be political. Hopefully future admins will restore the bipartisan tradition there.

Exactly. I will not go to the Kennedy Center while Trump is in charge.

OP, I truly appreciate your thoughtful request and care for these workers. However, I can’t condone what’s happening and I know I will be judged in the future if I am part of this travesty. I would encourage the workers to change jobs immediately to avoid being caught up in the mess.

I'm curious to see what happens with Conan's Mark Twain Prize. If it will go on as scheduled and, if so, will the celebrities who are supposed to honor him attend?
