Wuhan virus (coronavirus) arrives in the USA

Nope. They're testing. Why can't people understand still testing (MANY of which have been negative) vs confirmed??

After watching the video of that Hong Kong U. doctor, I believe that this virus is soon (next 3-4 months) to be everywhere. Major cities first. If we aren't getting the virus from a few cities in Chine it'll be coming from elsewhere.

Travel restrictions at this point are shutting the barn door after the horse got out.

If you have flu like symptoms right now it is probably the flu which is definitely going around. But pretty soon it could easily be this novel coronavirus.

Frankly, I'd prefer to get it right now, so if I have complications, there's plenty of medical help available. AT the peak of an epidemic there probably won't be easy access to life saving treatment that we have right now.

I think in many cases the novel corona virus is mild but I'm older and my husband in particular has many health conditions. I kind of wish we can just get it over with since there's no vaccine and no medications.

Agreed on a lot of this.

It is out of China enough that a ban on travel from China is useless. Could come from Germany or Canada. And any US patients now will be luckier than any patients during an epidemic here.

130 dead in China out of 6000 sick. That’s a 2% fatality rate. That’s a lot worse than the flu right?
Anonymous
Yes but that 6,000 number is bound to be way lower than reality. Imagine all of the mildly ill or asymptomatic people who aren’t being diagnosed.

Is anybody else surprised that we are not hearing more about the cases in the US, in terms of how they are doing now? The first patient was apparently virtually healthy (recovered?) a week ago, and now is in only "satisfactory" condition??

I’m surprised they are not announcing test results faster.

I'm confused by the GMU one. What I was reading was that the test only takes about 2 days. Why is it still pending?

On Reddit people are wondering why CDC is not releasing results of tests. It’s been days and tgey completed a bunch of them.

Also from Reddit

“From someone I know who’s aunt works at San Francisco General Hospital:

2 Confirmed cases at San Francisco General Hospital

Suspected, isolated and being tested for: 3 Seton Hospital

1 Kaiser Oakland

1 Kaiser Daly City”

I don't think you calculate the fatality rate like that, especially at the start of an epidemic where cases are rising exponentially. People who die might be ill for, say, two weeks. So back when those 600 were first infected, maybe there were only 1000 cases, as an example.

Meanwhile, of course the 6000 sick number must be underreported, because it doesn't count those who didn't seek medical testing (mild cases) and those who just weren't tested (no kits available).

This is really not a useful post. A reddit quote of someone's aunt?

Yes, in Germany they are doing it more locally, and the turnaround is much faster (same day it looks like). They better distribute a test to states/hospitals very soon!

Just now on BBC:...
THIS IS MAJOR!

HERE IS WHY:

Doctors said the copy could be used as "control material" for testing and "will be a game changer for diagnosis".
That could involve an early-diagnosis test which could detect the virus in people who have not displayed symptoms.

So far we only could test the cases after they became symptomatic right???

Coronavirus: Australian scientists first to recreate virus outside China

Scientists in Australia have become the first to recreate the new coronavirus outside of China in what they have called a "significant breakthrough".
The discovery will be shared with the World Health Organization (WHO) in the hope it may help efforts to diagnose and treat the virus.
Scientists in China have also recreated the virus and shared its genome sequence, but not the virus itself.
The outbreak has killed 132 people in China and infected close to 6,000.
There are at least 47 cases confirmed in 16 other countries, including in Thailand, France, the US and Australia. No deaths have been reported outside China.

Researchers at a specialist lab in Melbourne, Australia, said they were able to grow a copy of the virus from an infected patient. The sample was sent to them last Friday.
"We've planned for an incident like this for many, many years and that's really why we were able to get an answer so quickly," said Dr Mike Catton of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity.
Hope of 'game changer'
Doctors said the copy could be used as "control material" for testing and "will be a game changer for diagnosis".
That could involve an early-diagnosis test which could detect the virus in people who have not displayed symptoms.

Chinese authorities have said the virus - like a normal flu - is able to spread during its incubation period.
But the WHO has said it remains unclear whether it is contagious before symptoms appear.

What are viruses? And how do they spread?
"An antibody test will enable us to retrospectively test suspected patients so we can gather a more accurate picture of how widespread the virus is, and consequently, among other things, the true mortality rate," said Dr Catton.
"It will also assist in the assessment of effectiveness of trial vaccines."

Swine Flu ended up having a fatality rate of .02% It was said to be a very mild flu.

I wonder how long it will take to develop such a test that could tell who is sick before they are symptomatic
but if they could come up with this soon enough, it could really help to contain this in a way.
