Lot of great lacrosse in the Concorde district from top to bottom. Many of these girl’s are teammates in the off-season with Club teams. |
Centreville what happened? Can’t hang? |
I’m not sure anyone can hang with 12-0 Oakton this season. The Wildcats got burned numerous times by Oakton players who don’t have a JMU or URI label attached to their name. It is genuinely a pick your poison situation. Also, when the Centerville center directed the ball away from Miss JMU, #21 stepped up on the other side of the circle. The Cougars are the closest to being a well oiled machine that you will find in a Northern Virginia public school. |
Yes, I am aware of that. I cheer for all of them, too, just not with cowbell and noisemakers. I sit in the stands as well because that's the appropriate place for me to sit. I sit as far away from the cowbell and noisemakers, but I still find them obnoxious. One week, I moved over to the other team's stands to avoid the cowbell as much as possible. No, I do not want to join in with using cowbell and noisemakers. I will continue to cheer for "our girls" in a less obnoxious manner. Thank you. |

Oakton looks very impressive this year! In addition to their Offense (i.e. Pick your Poison) their Defense has held nearly every opponent to 10 goals or less. |
Any other game details? This one shocks me. I thought Madison was an easy cover at the -2 spread. Not necessarily a blow-out just thought it would be a similar score to the Oakton versus Centreville game. West Potomac is still my sleeper team (not getting much attention) and expect them to beat both Woodson and West Springfield next week. |
Agree their defense is rock solid. Played shutdown second half only yielding 3 goals, one which was short handed. They have a very senior heavy squad with some great young girls who made an impact last night. Top to bottom don’t exhibit a lot of weaknesses. Must play 50 full minutes to beat them not a half or a few runs. Not saying they can’t or won’t get beat but a full solid game with few turnovers may work coupled with them playing poorly which hasn’t happened yet. Districts and Regionals will be a dogfight. CVille has some excellent players and I thought their goalie actually made that game a lot closer as she made some great saves, especially first half. None of this matters come one and done. |
25% of their opponents have got double digits on them, so they are vulnerable on defense. The trick is you need to do both - score on them and stop their vaunted attack. That’s where the magic sauce comes in cause it is hard to do both and no one has successfully done it yet. |
The best defense is a good ball-possessing offense. Couple this with a good draw percentage and you have a formula where defensive success measured by goals given up in a game can be very misleading. Tracking goals given up per minute of opponent possession would be a more accurate way to assess a defenses strength. For example, if a team possesses the ball 60% of the game and scores 17 goals that’s .57 goals per minute of possession. If an opponent then possesses the ball for 40% and scores 11 goals that’s .55 goals per minute of possession. Both teams’ offenses are equally effective in this case. And one may argue the team only possessing the ball 40% of the time actually may be more effective against a defense/goalie given the likelihood they will have taken fewer shots. Teams that have generally controlled the ball during the season could have the tide turned on them if they run into a team at regionals or states that can flip that time of possession. This is where a team’s defense will truly be measured. Can they stop an offense when they have to play defense 60% of the game. This is why me and done is so dangerous. |
The good thing for Oakton is that they have already faced and defeated every likely team they will meet in the district and regional playoffs (Madison, Centerville, South Lakes, Langley and Yorktown). There will be no matchup surprises, only some possible coaching adjustments. The problem for opponents is that Oakton’s younger players are stepping up more as the season progresses, making them tougher to stop than earlier in the season. |
Did not see the Madison - South Lakes game, but I don't know that the score is shocking. South Lakes is decent. And it was the third game in four days for Madison. An all out effort in the loss to Oakton, followed by a tough trip to SSAS, and then South Lakes. A key senior goal scorer was injured in their Oakton game Monday--so that's two key seniors out with injury. Expect them to rally for next week's season finale and tune up for playoffs. |
Good news: #3 was back for Madison against South Lakes after the Monday injury (Senior - 1st team Concorde District last year) last year after getting injured early in the Monday game against Oakton and sitting out next game. She was out most of the game in the loss to Oakton. |
Madison and Oakton will have all week to rest their players. Madison has a Friday game and Oakton has 2 games (Wakefield and Chantilly). Plus a bye in the future for Districts. Bodes well for a possible rematch barring a South Lakes or Centreville upset. |
