I’m not sure anyone can hang with 12-0 Oakton this season. The Wildcats got burned numerous times by Oakton players who don’t have a JMU or URI label attached to their name. It is genuinely a pick your poison situation. Also, when the Centerville center directed the ball away from Miss JMU, #21 stepped up on the other side of the circle. The Cougars are the closest to being a well oiled machine that you will find in a Northern Virginia public school.
Oakton looks very impressive this year! In addition to their Offense (i.e. Pick your Poison) their Defense has held nearly every opponent to 10 goals or less.
The best defense is a good ball-possessing offense. Couple this with a good draw percentage and you have a formula where defensive success measured by goals given up in a game can be very misleading. Tracking goals given up per minute of opponent possession would be a more accurate way to assess a defenses strength. For example, if a team possesses the ball 60% of the game and scores 17 goals that’s .57 goals per minute of possession. If an opponent then possesses the ball for 40% and scores 11 goals that’s .55 goals per minute of possession. Both teams’ offenses are equally effective in this case. And one may argue the team only possessing the ball 40% of the time actually may be more effective against a defense/goalie given the likelihood they will have taken fewer shots. Teams that have generally controlled the ball during the season could have the tide turned on them if they run into a team at regionals or states that can flip that time of possession. This is where a team’s defense will truly be measured. Can they stop an offense when they have to play defense 60% of the game. This is why me and done is so dangerous.
