Here's one for discussion -- how many VHSL teams would finish above .500 if they played in the ISL AA?

If they all moved to the ISL AA, that would be one hell of a big watered-down division with a lot of them all playing former VHSL teams in the new AA, so I think roughly half would finish above .500 or so. Somebody's gotta win those games.

Or is that not what you are looking for?

Okay, I'll play....Using last spring's teams: I think that class leaders of 6A (Yorktown/Langley) would go at least 5-3 if either of them were the 9th team in the league. Not so sure the other 6A teams like Oakton/Madison could beat .500. 4A Dominion would likely go 5-3 as well. Not certain about 5A Riverside, probably 4-4. Lots of scores and match ups from last year to use for comparison. For Sping 2023, I have no idea. Of course you never know, teams always have "off" days and some "perfect" days.

That's right (of course the PP reminds that there is no point too pedantic to make on DCUM). Last spring was arguably a down year for the top half of the ISL AA and I think maybe 2 to 3 teams would crack .500, in each case by sweeping the bottom half. Putting aside an aberrational day for both squads, hard to see any VSHL team taking more than one game out of the 6 they'd play against Saints, Visi and SR. So, best case, a 4th or 5th place finish. Expect they'd do a bit better in WCAC.

In 6A VHSL, I think Oakton is a team to watch out for this spring. They only graduated 3 seniors and have some strong senior talent this year. I think Yorktown will also be good, having only graduated 3 seniors as well, but may have a tough time repeating. I predict Langley and Madison will both have a bit of a drop with each losing 10-12 starters from last year. Robinson will be good, but I don't think they quite match up with the others. Same with Woodson. And, I think Battlefield will make a run again, as there isn't much competition for them in Regions A and B.

for what its worth, in the Fall Woodson League, Yorktown fell to PVI on Sunday and Dominion (4A) beat Battlefield

WIW is probably zero. (Pre) Fall Ball games played in August mean about as much as NFL pre-season games (or even less considering the season is 7 months away), so I wouldn't worry on results. Most teams are not full strength and usually use the fall to give young/new players a look, get rust off, etc.

As for the crystal ball, agree on Oakton. May be right there with Yorktown based on what they have coming back. Disagree on Woodson. They return their best players from last year, so the expectations are high.

Agree the jury is still out on some traditional powers that lost a lot from last year. I expect they will get there by the season as there still is some talent returning, but it will depend on how they replace the losses. I expect hiccups with some of them along the way.

Battlefield is always the exception and hard to read. I think they are a really good team, but they just don't have the competition in Regions A and B to sharpen them when it matters. Maybe Freedom or JC can challenge them, but I would not be surprised with another VHSL runner-up trophy in their trophy case next Spring.

Too piggie back off of this, and I’m not saying this would have been the difference to win the game. But, Battlefield was missing quite a few key players, such as their phenomenal sophomore attacker and their All-State goalie

I agree on the Woodson comment as they are returning their All American Junior Middie

As for Battlefield, you are right, there is zero competition for them. They will be runners up again, but the weak competition will not prepare them for the final game

I agree, WIW is zero. Yorktown only had 11 kids and "borrowed" 2 from PVI so they could field a full team and have one substitute. And a few of their top players don't play fall ball due to club soccer and club field hockey commitments.

A prime example of why fall ball results mean didley. A number of girls miss due to travel practice, recruiting camps, church, injury or conflict with other sports.

Battlefield is trying to include as many Fx teams and privates on their schedule this year. Talking to their assistant and he is pushing for the toughest schedule possible. Team lost 10 seniors but lots of talent still left. Also said look for aggressive and physical team play this year thinks that was one of the things that beat them in finals.

Not sure aggressive and physical play was what that team was lacking. They played three tough teams this past season including scrimmages and lost them all. Riverside didn’t even play four starters in their game and still won. Both teams played two players down, so it was physical. Battlefield wants to believe they are better than they are by beating really weak teams in a weak region.
