DH and I use an electric kettle for morning beverages. Him for his French press coffee, me for tea.
He fills the kettle each night before bed under the rationale that it a.) saves a minute in the am and, b.) gets the water temp to room temp overnight, therefore decreasing the amount of time needed to bring it to a boil. I am up first and often don't want t o wait for the entire kettle to boils o I dump out half the water, boil what I need, refill the kettle and set it to boil again. He's 'caught' me doing this enough times that it now bothers him enough to call me wasteful and inconsiderate. I refuse to apologize for dumping ~11 ounces of water down the drain in the interest of saving myself time. He is upset about this, so..... he has taken to dumping my brewed tea down the drain anytime I live it unattended. Who ITA here? |
You are both inflexible.
He is way wrong for dumping your tea you have already made. Who does that? It’s extremely immature. Neither of the original issues are wrong or right but you need to find a method that works for both of you. |
You're both being a bit stubborn about saving a minute or two in the morning. He's an a-hole for dumping the brewed tea ... but if you want to focus on solutions rather than blame, get a second kettle so you can each heat your water as you prefer. |
Get a second kettle! Problem solved |
He’s being ridiculous. I’d flip out if my H dumped my tea out. |
Cold water boils fastest. |
You need two kettles. Maybe coffee/tea station in the bedroom to save those extra minutes |
Ask him to fill the kettle halfway the night before. |
Look my xDH was a real piece of work … but I don’t think he would EVER do something like dump out my tea on purpose! I would find that shockingly nasty. At least when he called me names it would be because we were actually in the middle of a fight … but dumping my coffee out to make a point? Nuh UH. Is he abusive in other ways? |
Get two kettles. You two will have to put your names on the kettles so you don't fight over who is using who's kettle. |
Dumping out your tea? He’s TA. |
Why don’t you just use a Brita set out at room temperature so no matter who pours water in the kettle it’s already at the room temperature which he prefers. Then you can do the amount that you prefer. I think you’re missing out on the fact that he’s already saving you time by having the water set out at room temperature.
But the fact that you’re both so inflexible, and and you’re honestly quite inconsiderate about this, does not give me good hope for the future of your relationship. |
I searched electric tea kettles and found the most expensive pink tea kettle available. Buy this please.

+1 geez Though I think the tea dump is more wasteful as it also wastes the tea. |
This is beyond ridiculous. But if you’re going to play along, fill a glass bottle and set next to kettle, use that to fill the kettle with room temp water after you’re done with it. |
