Uh, How about for the good of the nation?!

they did that already, with the whole debt ceiling negotiations. republicans went back on that deal immediately, so there is no reason to have any faith in them not moving the football again.

dems need to just stop negotiating with terrorists. republicans know what they agreed to, they just need to do the work of putting it in a bill and bringing it to the floor for a vote.

instead we get this sideshow impeachment circus and handwaving about the border which absolutely no one actually cares about except maybe agricultural and manufacturing plant employers since they can't actually find enough people to do backbreaking labor for peanuts anymore, whoops. and then you wonder why your food and goods prices keep skyrocketing, while millions of gov workers and contractors go without paychecks.

Pretty certain that the mayor of NYC cares about the border, as do other communities where the TX governor is sending migrants.

One again, the reason we are shutting down is because Rs cannot agree among themselves what to put in the spending bills. This has gone on for months, and they are still no closer to agreement. “The border” only became a talking point 36 hours ago because McCarthy is flailing and trying to cast blame on anyone else after others in his own party, including the Senate Majority Leader, declared that this mess is his fault.

Relax. I’m sure there won’t be a shutdown beyond maybe a short one over the weekend. So much drama over nothing.

If it’s nothing, why are you in this thread trolling so much?

Just offering my view, which is contrary to the chicken littles. That is, there is plenty of time to get this worked out. Call me an optimist.

You’ve been in this thread for hours, Mr. Optimist. Seems awfully strange for something you consider no big deal.

DP. We’ve just been here so many times before, and only rarely is there an actual shutdown. Probably will be the case here too. Lots of unnecessary drama for sure.

FYI, the latest from WaPo (as of 2:31pm). It does sound like perhaps a bit of forward progress?

I’m not the only optimist here. No need to call me names.

yes it does. Whether it will be enough for the GOP House extremists is another question.

But that same article says:

Final passage on the Senate’s stopgap resolution, however, will likely be stalled by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who opposes any new funds for Ukraine and who said on Thursday that he would object to moving the bill forward through a process known as unanimous consent. Without Paul’s support, senators would be forced to hold a full vote on the bill, slowing down the process even as the clock ticks closer to Sunday, when government funding will run out.

And says that the House won't be able to pass anything with Ukraine funding attached, which will still be a part of the Senate resolution.

I don't know. I'm military so I'd love them to come to a consensus and get this done so I get my October 15 paycheck, but I don't think there's much hope in that article. Maybe some of the previous posters that indicated Biden would step in and make another deal are right. I hope so.

I'm pessimistic, but I hope for your sake, and all of our troops, they do.

If the only difference is funding for Ukraine, that's a hell of a hill to die on for Democrats. Biden has negotiated away bigger priorities than that

There may be some progress - but there's still a ways to go. We'll see.

every article I have read about this has very optimistic and IMO misleading headlines. Every single one.

Another DP - we’ve gotten close to the deadline, yes, and ultimately a CR is passed in most cases. But what we (or at least I) haven’t seen happen often is agency leadership holding town halls and meetings specifically providing guidance to staff in the event of a shutdown. I can’t remember the last time they did that. But we’re having one of those meetings tomorrow and a colleague in another agency said they just had theirs.

Maybe adding border security to the Senate stopgap bill will do something, but as PP pointed out, there are still a LOT of question marks (including some agreement on what border security changes would be made). And it’s really all about the right-wing extremists at this point, isn’t it? How many times could we go through the cycle of McCarthy being forced out and voted back in?

the house is not going to take up the senates CR even if they pass it, with or without ukraine funding. it's all pointless.
