Official Government Shutdown 2023 Thread

The democrats will agree to $60b for border improvements, and a policy change requiring faster deportations in a last minute plea to keep the federal government open. McCarthy is pushing for more spending cuts which Democrats will likely agree to. The whole thing will be worked on on Saturday afternoon. Shutdown seems very unlikely.

Your friend should get a job writing SNL skits.

Why would the Dems want to cooperate with House Republicans when they are trying to impeach Biden?!?!

Is there any possibility that McCarthy, moderate Republicans and Democrats could make a deal: a bipartisan bill in exchange for just enough Democratic votes to save his speakership when Gaetz tries to topple him?

Would that be good optics for Biden and the Democratic party going into the Presidential election: that they saved the government and preserved its functions, in despite of MAGA?

Or does it look better for Democrats to watch it all burn and blame Republicans?

McCarthy loses his speakership if he allows the senate bill to come to the floor of the House. It would easily pass, but republicans would oust McCarthy for doing it

How in the world did we get to a point in our country where one man’s ego can hold us all hostage. This makes our legislative branch look like a bunch of clowns. JFC.

Right? WTF would anyone want that job anyway, good god.

Right, but my question was: when they vote on a new speaker, can McCarthy be reelected with a minimum of Democrat votes, in exchange for budging on a bipartisan bill?

Why would democrats agree to that? The last time they did, he renounced the compromises almost immediately. The debt ceiling deal was supposed to encompass budget agreements so that all of this could be avoided, but McCarthy went back on that as soon as the bill was passed

I really hope that is the case. It sounds plausible to me, given that some Senate Democrats want border improvements. If that’s the case, the House wingnuts will come around. Biden should too, given that most voters believe his border policy is a failure. Down to the wire? Yeah, maybe. But if this is the case it sounds very promising.

The House’s issue is not immigration. This is something McCarthy started harping on midweek to distract from the fact that he can’t get his own caucus to agree on anything. The Republicans still have no proposal for Biden to even negotiate with them over.

Yeah, hfc has said nothing about immigration, or that it's an acceptable compromise. They want to cut things to the bone. Many say no CR period!

They’re working on long term bills and don’t want a CR. But the long term bills will not be ones that have broad appeal.

Is it border security or overall funding of the govt? doesn't he have 10 hardliners standing in the way of any funding that doesn't include cuts? I think that's his problem right now. get the Dems on board with border security but he still has crazies standing in the way of agreeing to a CR that doesn't involve deep cuts. If he can't get them to agree, he doesn't have the votes to get a measure out the door.

Their long term bills can't even pass the house. There is a report that the agriculture bill can't pass because the current version reverses the FDA on mifepristone availability and there are republicans who will not vote for it with that ban and others who will not vote for it without.

We got an email from NRC stating we have carry over funds for a while. Unless we are in for a shutdown that lasts more than a month, I think we will be at work, which is good. If the shutdown lasts longer, only the resident inspectors, some regional inspectors, and emergency response personnel will be essential. However, other inspections and licensing will be postponed, which means crunch time when we get back during the holidays.

Agree it is going to happen. We are being told we have funds for a while, but no time given.

The 🎱 is no shutdown!

I'm honestly not sure why Biden/Dems would do this. The Rs are the ones who will be blamed if the government shutdown happens.

McCarthy was quoted as saying that he is optimistic there will not be a shutdown.

But he is a known liar.
