McCarthy won't even consider a bipartisan option. |
Is there any possibility that McCarthy, moderate Republicans and Democrats could make a deal: a bipartisan bill in exchange for just enough Democratic votes to save his speakership when Gaetz tries to topple him? Would that be good optics for Biden and the Democratic party going into the Presidential election: that they saved the government and preserved its functions, in despite of MAGA? Or does it look better for Democrats to watch it all burn and blame Republicans? |
A friend who is heavily involved in politics told me that Schumer is pushing Biden to meet with McCarthy. The democrats will agree to $60b for border improvements, and a policy change requiring faster deportations in a last minute plea to keep the federal government open. McCarthy is pushing for more spending cuts which Democrats will likely agree to. The whole thing will be worked on on Saturday afternoon. Shutdown seems very unlikely. |
I heard similar things, but that Ukraine money is still a sticking point that may blow the whole thing up. |
Sure, Jan. |
This is going to happen. I’m betting on two weeks minimum. I highly doubt they’ll hash anything out this weekend. |
McCarthy loses his speakership if he allows the senate bill to come to the floor of the House. It would easily pass, but republicans would oust McCarthy for doing it |
How in the world did we get to a point in our country where one man’s ego can hold us all hostage. This makes our legislative branch look like a bunch of clowns. JFC. |
I really hope that is the case. It sounds plausible to me, given that some Senate Democrats want border improvements. If that’s the case, the House wingnuts will come around. Biden should too, given that most voters believe his border policy is a failure. Down to the wire? Yeah, maybe. But if this is the case it sounds very promising. |
Seriously, you ask this after Trump?! McCarthy has a Trump-sized ego. |
When is Gaetz going to be charged on that sex scandal stuff? And MYG on laying the pipe bomb? Wouldn't that put a dent in the overthrow of McCarthy? |
Congress needs to overhaul our immigration laws. Not sure why this is on Biden? Congress makes the laws. Right now Congress isn’t doing anything but the stupid Biden impeachment. They need to do their jobs!! |
It's not his ego. It's actually pragmatism. If McCarthy is ousted, then the Republicans will have to find a new Speaker which will be very very difficult. And will probably take a long time, during which the House is in limbo. Keeping McCarthy is a good priority, in the short and medium term. |
Right, but my question was: when they vote on a new speaker, can McCarthy be reelected with a minimum of Democrat votes, in exchange for budging on a bipartisan bill? |
The House’s issue is not immigration. This is something McCarthy started harping on midweek to distract from the fact that he can’t get his own caucus to agree on anything. The Republicans still have no proposal for Biden to even negotiate with them over. |
