It’s now Primary bedroom

Umm, why?

Where you do you think that term originates from? (Master = master of slaves)

Or Foxhounds. Dog abuse!

Yeah I’m pretty sure this is a gender issue (master of the house). The term pre-dates slavery.

Technically it doesn't exactly predate slavery because slavery is an OLD instituion. But sure, predates the American form. It just meant the man in charge of the estate, whether that estate had serfs, servants, slaves, or was a single household with a family and kids.

Serious question: do you think the American woke are aware that the institution of slavery predates American slavery?

I assume they're familiar with Moses and the Israelites.

I would not make that assumption.

Why can't "master" just become a gender neutral term like "actor"?

If anything master is sexist not racist, but I am unconvinced that any commonly understood phrase needs to be changed because of old irrelevant bad roots.

We look at what something is today. We have a way to say 'biggest bedroom and bathroom in the house' now that is commonly understood. Why would we change it for a reason no one thinks about today?

Actor for females is incorrect. It’s said ‘actress’

Actually, for many years now, the term "actor" has been applied to both female and male performers.

https://www.theguardian.com/theobserver/2011/sep/25/readers-editor-actor-or-actress

Erroneously so. If I were an actress, I wouldn’t want to be called an actor. But the Guardian wants to put balls on me. Even more so, I’m supposed to be happy and grateful for having my own life individuality erased.

All of this confusion and language abuse stems from the fact that English speakers suck at language. They are perpetually confused. In the Latin languages and all languages with gender, the umbrella word is almost always masculine. If you break it down to the individual case, you use feminine or masculine as it fits. Again, especially Americans, suck at grammar, and they never know ‘I’ from ‘me’, ‘well’ from ‘good’, etc.

Bad actors (as in not the entertainment kind - masculine because used in a general term) take advantage of this to rewrite history, linguistics, and ultimately the memory of a people.

Nope. Not anymore. Do try to keep up.

Actors who are female aren’t actresses any more than female senators are senatresses.

-keeping up with all the things you are and are not allowed to say is a chore.
-making sure that you monitor those around you, constantly, to ensure that they too are keeping up to date on what the are and are not allowed to say.

I mean, it's easier to just not interact withe the world, or EVER speak out loud.

Tbh I have stopped all non superficial (and I guess most non-business) communication with Americans because of this issue plus covid attitudes (but the latter is irrelevant to this thread). I only hang out and/or discuss things with my immigrant and expat friends.

We moved and send our child to a private school that’s religious (ie mostly Republican). It’s such a relief to just say what I think without being on eggshells all the time. There is much more diversity of thought, opinion, and speech.

Serious question - is this because of the overall effort to degender English language? Or are people actually offended by the term?

Also what is happening in Romance languages where everything has a gender? Shoes, pants, hat - all masculine in Spanish. House, table, light - all feminine. Is this phenomenon distinctly among American English speakers?

Other countries don’t exercise such extreme wokeness so nothing

If anyone disagrees, fine, but I'm avoiding future contact. My feminine world won't be erased by anyone. If I am the last female on earth, with the last feminine pink floral poof, so be it. I will be that feminist warrior.

Same. Leave me alone!! I like being traditionally feminine with long hair and breasts clad in a floral sundress. You do you but get out of my face.

I think you need the word "master" to mean something before "master of slaves" can mean anything, right? Is it etymologically obvious that the first original meaning relates to slavery? I mean, master of a house? ("If the thief be not found, the master of the house must appear before the judges..." -Exodus) Master of an animal? ("his master's voice" from RCA)

Genuinely asking -- is "mastery" of a subject matter or skill okay? Like, if first grade teacher says "little Billy has really mastered arithmetic," has she gone too far?

She should be mocked on Twitter, then fired. An angry mob should gather outside her house and harass her family. I mean, that’s obviously where all this is headed.
