Without a tape measure they look like 36" at best.

Even IF the railings were 3 in short, it would.not have mattered. You're a moron

The rules are the rules. The court doesn't operate on whimsy.

Seriously, you think a cruise line subject to suit in the US would flout the rules?

The grandfather is an idiot that doesn’t understand the purpose of railings. These same people do this at the sides of cliffs.

The sill of the window is certainly 40" or more. Regardless, the railing may be too low by regulation.

It does not appear that those regulations apply to railings that are in front of walls of windows. Seems like they apply to railings that are in front of the open air.

I have no desire to watch the video because I don’t want that image in my head. But according to this article, the grandfather leans out the window and then immediately drops to the ground when she falls.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/abcnews.go.com/amp/US/harrowing-surveillance-video-captures-year-olds-fatal-fall/story%3fid=67195061

This seems to contradict his allegations of thinking the window was closed and looking for her on the ground when she fell.

It’s so hard to keep reading about this case. I had sympathy for him at first giving him the benefit of the doubt that maaaaybe he really did think the window was closed. But I don’t understand how anyone in their right mind could look out a window and hold a small child up. My heart is broken for this little girl who had her life taken away by the deliberate negligent act of a trusted adult.

I get that accidents happen with small children, but the more I read, the more egregious his actions seem.

*He leans out the window before holding her up. And then when she falls out the window he immediately falls to the ground.

ABC News viewed the video. Here is their description:

“They walk over to the wall of windows where Anello appears to look over the railing, through the open window. Anello picks Chloe up and stands her up on the railing, and they appear to lean over together looking out over the port.

Then he re-adjusts and sits Chloe on the railing, still facing the port. They lean over again and she disappears from the frame.”

Grandpa is lying.

Why do people lie when they know there's video of their actions? This and the reporter assaulter... it's mind boggling. YOU. ARE. ON. VIDEOTAPE. Why do you lie??!

I’m sure it’s hard for his brain to accept that he’s responsible for the death of a small child. And not in an “oops I backed out of the driveway and didn’t see her” way, but he DECIDED to pick her up and lean her out a window. It’s so astoundingly stupid and he’s clearly not in touch with reality in parading around telling his story. I don’t know how the lawyer, having viewed this video, could encourage the continual telling of the glass wall story.

I do still feel bad for the parents even though others say they’re greedy. I don’t think that’s it. I’m sure they’d give anything in the world to have their daughter back. But accepting the fact someone you trusted brought about an incredibly awful death for your child has to be excruciatingly difficult to process. I wish they’d take a step back from the media spotlight. I don’t think it’s helping them. But my stomach churns at the thought of learning one of my parents killed my child.

That statute doesn't apply to this ship. It applies only to small passenger vessels (under 100 gross tons). Freedom of the Seas has gross tonnage of 154,407.

The parents are willing to DESTROY someone else (in this case, Royal Caribbean) who did NOTHING wrong. That is pure evil. They deserve every "excruciating" moment they face.

This news segment discusses the surveillance video and shows a closer view of an identical window. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqS_55470Sw

The railing is about a foot in front of the glass. So it may be possible that grandpa leaned a little forward without sticking his head out the window. But, I'm thinking he just wasn't really paying attention to what he was doing.

If you take away the santa clause glasses and beard, and give him a decent haircut, he'll look like a normal 51 yr old. see pic:

https://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2019/12/18/chloe-wiegand-video-seen-indystar-shows-minutes-before-fatal-fall/2685978001/

He looks so old b/c of his elderly styling. And apparently, his wife is in her 60s.

I think this whole thing happened b/c he is not very familiar with toddlers. He never had any kids of his own. Never raised any kids. He is the grandmother's husband.... not a true "grandpa" who has raised his own kids.

To delay punishment.
When my DD was in 7th grade, a boy cut off part of her hair during locker clean out in the hallway. Not only did people see him with scissors another student discarded, but he was warned the hallway camera video would be shown to his mother. He continued lying even as the principal hit play for his mother.
