This whole thread makes me sad.
These women work hard, have worked hard ALL their lives to get where they are. I’m sad that they are being criticized for celebrating their goals in their first game in (for some) their first World Cup. They deserve to be able to celebrate with all their teammates. I would want my DD to be able to celebrate and I would definitely be screaming for her in the stands. I watched some videos of the parents of some of the players celebrating. “My little girl scored a goal!” It was heartwarming - the emotions they felt! Why should anyone have to tamper their excitement? Like many have said before - it’s the World Cup! |
Had your child been playing in the World Cup, I daresay the goals would still feel meaningful. It's not a local tournament. It's the World Cup. And if they're playing in a tournament where goal differential matters, I would expect their coach to have explained it to them. Once you lose your first tournament because the team you tied had more goals than you, you learn every single goal matters. |

Petition FIFA to implement a mercy room.
Until that time have a coke and a smile and..... |

I asked my young daughter what she thought of this.
She reminded me that last winter her team had played up a year in an indoor league where they were regularly blown away, huge lopsided shorelines. It was no fun, she said, but the only time she was truly humiliated was when she heard one player yell to another, "Hey, you're not allowed to shoot before three passes!" Proud of the US team for a record-setting performance in their opening match. Pretty sure the biggest win in world cup history is worth some celebration -- and I'd bet dollars to donuts the Thai players would agree. |

Not a single person said that the US should stop scoring. Not. A. Single. One. Everyone has complained about the excessive celebration. One can still score without acting like each one was a game winner. |
| Nothing like a little censorship to cap this worthless thread off. Shameful, and several posters here should be ashamed. |

I'm pretty sure if I ever made it to the national stage and scored a goal, I'd be celebrating my tail off--whether it was goal #1 or #10. The hugs and cheers are completely appropriate.
FIFA has some internal reflection in their future (I hope). Is it good to expand the field that far? Does it really benefit anyone at this point? |
Maybe you should learn a bit about the game. Not everyone on the team HAD been there before. To score your first World Cup goal is amazing. Period. It's a lifetime's work. But I'm sure you'll tell us who is allowed to celebrate which accomplishments and when. Since it's not ok for young American women to celebrate their first World Cup goals, who exactly is it ok for? |
| I bet if it was game 2 or game 3 the celebrations would have been toned down. This is adrenaline, the culmination of years of practice and training, and their first opportunity (for many) to be in the cup. I don't blame them at all for their celebrations. |
Quit making this about Rapinoe. |
It was Group Stage against Thailand. Please. |
