US vs Thailand

This. I'm with Alexi L. If I'm the coach in the biggest women's tournament in the world, I keep scoring. Who knows if you'll need the GD.

This is what is wrong with America today. Utter crap. People lose, teams lose, kids lose. If you don't want to lose, work harder.

Germany was up 5-0 at half and won 7-1 vs Brazil. US up 3-0 at half and win 13-0. Don't see a difference? Germany kept playing, but understood what mattered is maintaining and improving their quality of play. US women play checkers; Germany's men play chess.

So, here's a serious question - what would you have them do? Non-starters were put in, to the limit soccer permits. The rules don't allow for the entire starting 11 to be replaced with lesser players, and even if they did, the US reserves are markedly better than the Thai first string. Should they just not shoot? Just passing around the ball isn't going to improve the quality of the US team's play; if anything, it's detrimental because the talent gap is so large.

I spent some formative years in the UK, where sportsmanship was an important concept - an ideal closely linked to the old-fashioned notion of what a "real" gentleman does when his opponent is clearly weaker than he.

These women would benefit from a lesson in sportsmanship.

This sounds pretty sanctimonious, particularly given that England''s men's national team put a 13-0 drubbing on Ireland in 1882. So the old-fashioned notions of what a real gentlemen do to clearly weaker opponent are divorced from what real gentlemen from England historically did to weaker opponents.

See also India.

The last 15 minutes of the game, I kept thinking how I could really go for a plate of Pad Thai with pork. I also kept thinking how my 13 yr old daughter can send a goal kick farther than the Thai’s GK. I’d like to see that team play in the U18 DA league. I think they’d finish near the bottom. Seriously.

It isn’t about the goals being scored it is about the excessive celebration. After about 6 act like you’ve been there before. Nobody is suggesting they take their foot off the gas but clearly Thailand is not very good so why all the celebrations in freaking Group Stage? The defending World Cup Champions acting like they just won World Cup again. It’s just Group Stage!!

So let me get this right, you train your tail off your entire life, make it through the politics, training, sweat and tears and get a roster spot on the USWNT. Then you take the field in the world's biggest tournament, and that player is NOT supposed to celebrate when they get a goal? Really.

I'd celebrate every second. If Thailand didn't like it, then play some Def.

This is the world cup, not some qualifier. Not the USWNT fault for being better and they should be allowed to celebrate all the hard work they have put in when scoring.

If you are the PP, you are completely changing your position. You didn't mention celebration once, and did indeed suggest that they take their foot off the gas.

If you're not the PP, pay attention, and don't respond with irrelevant and patently untrue posts.

Yawn. Rapinoe=Kaepernick. Been there, done that; 2016 is calling and wants its headlines back.

It comes down to having some class and toning down your celebrations when you are beating a clearly inferior opponent. Few here are saying “stop scoring,” but do it with some class, like you’ve done it before. Nothing was gained from Rapinoe’s flying wonk celebration other than making her look like the pompous ass she apparently is.

It's the world cup, you need the excess goals in case of tie (I didn't grow up in this country, so I know that 1 goal is the difference between the cup and 4 years of tears).

However, I'm just embarrassed on the over celebration and unsportsmanlike celebration. My daughter plays soccer and is a big fan of several international starts - this has completely put me off this team.

Have you competed on the international level? Because let me tell you - as someone who has - you do not shame another (less than) competitor. This was embarrassing. After goal 5 or 6 the celebrations should have been toned down.

Wow! We are "shaming" our competition now. Let me see, where have I heard this line of victimization before...?

Imagine if a man celebrated the way Rapinoe celebrated even if the score was 5-0.

I would likely bet the house a red card would come out shortly after as well as a stretcher.

I’m not the PP you speak of. Not sure what part of my post is untrue. It is group stage against the last seeded team. It was a rout and the celebrations absolutely could have been toned down. Keep pressing, keep playing and scoring just act a bit more professional about the goals after say 5.
