If you can read Chinese:
https://www.zhihu.com/question/51331837

It might not be an easy task to define the term, for as a social media buzzword and very often an instrument for ad hominem attack, it could mean different things for different people. A thread on “why well-educated elites in the west are seen as naïve “white left” in China” on Zhihu, a question-and-answer website said to have a high percentage of active users who are professionals and intellectuals, might serve as a starting point.

The question has received more than 400 answers from Zhihu users, which include some of the most representative perceptions of the ‘white left’. Although the emphasis varies, baizuo is used generally to describe those who “only care about topics such as immigration, minorities, LGBT and the environment” and “have no sense of real problems in the real world”; they are hypocritical humanitarians who advocate for peace and equality only to “satisfy their own feeling of moral superiority”; they are “obsessed with political correctness” to the extent that they “tolerate backwards Islamic values for the sake of multiculturalism”; they believe in the welfare state that “benefits only the idle and the free riders”; they are the “ignorant and arrogant westerners” who “pity the rest of the world and think they are saviours”.

It's basically a term the Chinese use to trash people online.

Chinese here. What do you expect from a bunch of New Lefts who wanted Chairman Mao back? You are an idiot. If you like China so much, go live there and breath the fresh air.

Nobody here wants Chairman Mao. And we want nothing like your corrupt authoritarian government back in mainland China. Thanks for proving the point about the Chinese being clueless about American politics and society.

Why the multiple posts? The great fire wall giving you hicups?

So why are you quoting articles from the Chinese Propaganda department?

You seem confused. One poster is citing Chinese propaganda bashing the American left. Everyone else is calling bullshit on it.

This whole thread is ludicrous.

What next, will someone post an article saying "Uruguayan sorghum farmers think NASA engineers are whiny little bitches and that they will never put anything into space" - except that NASA engineers know a shit load more about putting things into space than Uruguayan sorghum farmers and have in fact been putting things into space, putting humans into space and on the moon and visited every planet in our solar system and the opinion of Uruguayan sorghum farmers on the subject is pretty much something irrelevant, meaningless and that nobody gives a damn about.

Pretty strong accusations to make of your fellow countrymen/women. I know where I read this political strategy/tactic to call political opponents these names as the ultimate end game strategy.

How did that work out for you?

I know that Trump has done his share of name calling, but republicans/conservatives as a whole does not do this. On the other hand, liberals throw around names and labels such as racist, sexist, homophobe, islamophobe, xenophobe as a core component of their current strategy.

And that current strategy is not working for them. At all.

Surely you're not actually equating liberals to "NASA engineers"... if so, thanks for yet another laugh!

Point sailed right over your head. These chinese commenters are commenting on something they clearly do not have the slightest freaking clue about. Kind of like what conservative commenters do, only worse.

Yet another blatant lie, that republicans/conservatives as a whole don't engage in name calling.

Occuoy also protested dems and had many anarchists and even some libertarians in their ranks so a pretty huge miss on relevance there.

When was the last time there was a liberal march for jobs, the economy, and national security - not as a side issue, but the main issue of the march.

When did conservatives last march for those things? Not anytime in the last 30 years...

They didn't march, and neither did libs, so what's your point? Libs should be held to a different standard? We don't march about those because by and large we are in pretty good shape in those areas. We haven't had major terrorism issues and the hype around illegals far exceeds reality.

Well, republicans in general don't march or protest, we are much more about individual responsibility and action than collective complaining. Take a look at the list of protests and marches in DC:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rallies_and_protest_marches_in_Washington,_D.C.#2017

As you can see, liberals tend to protest and march about the issues that care deeply about. Therefore, it would be indicative that liberals care deeply about jobs, the economy, and national security if they also marched about those things with the same frequency with which they protest and march about immigration, LGBT, and etc...

Individual responsibility and action is a big part of what makes up collective responsibility and action, you act as though the two are somehow incompatible or contradictory. They aren't. That said, collective action and responsibility are tremendously more effective and successful than individual action and responsibility because of the force multiplier of having more people aligned for a common goal.

This is because you are confused about the difference between individual liberty/responsibility and collective action. Go study the difference between liberalism and conservatism, their platforms with regards to the individual and the collective. The words don't mean what you think they mean because they have additional meaning beyond their literal interpretation. In the same way that liberalism in the US means very different things with liberalism in Europe. Individual liberty/responsibility doesn't mean people stop working together, to the contrary, this is the best type of working together because each person is doing their best to perform their part. In the liberal view, individual liberty/responsibility, even as participants in a larger group, has a much smaller role in the outcome; the individual is therefore dependent on the collective and a powerful central government to advocate on their behalf. Examples of how the two ways of thinking is how to approach the problem of poverty: conservatives may support training and job programs, where each person can improve the value of their labor, and therefore is better able to lift themselves out of poverty; democrats on the other hand will feel that individual effort will have limited effect, and call for programs such as welfare, affirmative action, and push these programs through the government.

Another example is worker's unions. Unions are a liberal idea and their members are almost always democrats. People who don't belong to unions feel that individuals have the liberty/responsibility to find the type of employment they want and at a fair compensation. People who do belong to unions rely on the collective to protect their jobs and pay. Both non-union and union people work with others very well to get what they want.

A more appropriate thread would be Russians think NASA engineers are whiny little bitches except for the Russian NASA engineers.

She is an embarrassment to Asian Americans. Major in Psychology and Theater, minor in German?

As a fellow Terp, this makes me sad.

Why? She can't criticize the Xi regime? Who voted him as the emperor of China? You are an embarrassment to humanity.

No, I am sad because she is a textbook example of ?????As a Chinese immigrant, I know there are many things that China can do better. It emerged from an oppressive communist regime into a more socialist one, but one that still trails the west in freedom, human rights, environmental protection, and other important areas. That said, China has been making blindingly fast progress by any historical measure, to the point that the west is telling China to pump the brakes and slow down, out of concern that China will be unable to deal with the pace of change and result in large swings in economic, cultural, and political stability. Her critique on the lack of freedom in China shows that she either has a lack of understanding of what is happening in China, or more likely she is grandstanding in front of a group of Americans, slapping the face of her home country to appeal to the pride of western liberals.

As an aside, all the talk about fresh air is pretty over the top. China's environment is *NOT* as good as the US, but it has gotten a lot better, and is not nearly as bad as she made it sound. Again, this shows that she is grandstanding, shaming her home country to an exaggerated degree to make western liberals feel good. I wouldn't be surprised that after this, she and her family will apply for asylum due to fear of political persecution. And of course her parents will have to be cared for on the backs of American tax payers because she is going to be less than productive with her degree choices.

She is a clown, making an exaggerated performance in the hopes of some reward from her audience.

Huh? I thought it was the liberal's worldview that we should march towards globalism, in which we care very much about what Uruguayan sorghum farmers think about our NASA engineers.

All of those Chinese intellectuals who think worrying about the environment is a hilarious joke are welcome to breath the air pollution in Chinese cities all they want. They can even make jokes about me while they do it. Sadly for their sake, the real joke will be on them.

All true. So why was President Obama always sucking their you-know-what instead of standing up for human rights?
