| If its too white don't go, of course that why its so white now. |
| There are several black guys where I work who are Nats fans. Also, lots of Latinos like baseball but that doesn't count I guess. The diversity has to be AA or it doesn't count? |
| This is one of the craziest race posts I've seen on DCUM. OP seems to be assuming that black people aren't showing up because the games are not accessible. There are PLENTY of black families in this area who can afford an outing to the Nats. They choose not to go. Who cares? I am black and have gone with my family to Nats games. I don't feel the least bit uncomfortable. In fact, at one game, I was rather surprised by the number of black people in the crowd, knowing it's not the most popular game. OP, you can save your concern - I don't think there are black families looking longingly at the ball park wishing they could go. If there were, they would be there at the games. |
as someone who worked in a baseball front office very briefly (the pay is atrocious and i didn't love the game enough to try to make it to GM - which is a more rare job than US senator), there are more than four women in baseball ops. orioles have one for example. so to astros, dodgers, and a few other teams. If you mean GM/AGM level, then no. I beleive there is only one woman - Jean Afterman with the yankees, who is rumoured to potentially get the GM job if cashman isn't re-upped in the bronx. there are gm's who are not white males - farhan zaidi is with the dodgers, but he reports to Friedman, who is president. cubs have a vp/agm that's nonwhite (shiraz rehman) but he reports to hoyer and epstein. al avila is cuban (tigers). THe guy at the marlins is black but i dont' think he'll keep his job when ownership switches to the new owners after loria. the pirates have FO staff that are not ex-players that are black. Good guys. mlb is doing a huge push for diversity in FO's. As someoen who has been to a number of winter meetings, there are actually a lot of women (more than i thought there would be) who are interested in breaking in. If a woman wants to break in today, my advice would be for her to go to a top school (ivy or top lac) and major in a stem subject where she gains programming skills. |
it isn't a crazy post. The commissioners office is VERY CONCERNED about what the OP has written about. |
i've worked in baseball - you don't the first thing about modern informational flow and the decision cycle that currently exists with clubs. in-game management is a part of a much larger picture. In fact many minorities have complained about the newer structure because it takes away power from managers (who are more apt to be ex-pros and therefore potentially minorities) and gives it to FO's. |
I'm a minority too. And I can be concerned about whatever I want to be, thank you very much. |

My white husband would rather put out his eye with a dull pencil than attend a baseball game. A small part of him already dies each time our mixed race son has a Little League game. I, on the other hand, am a minority and have learned to like baseball a lot more. My son and I attend one or two Nats game a year (husband and daughter are happy to stay home). There are ways to lessen the cost, as others have said- each person can bring in an unopened bottle of water and their own food, so you're not required to buy expensive ball park food. We do pay for parking because my son has peanut and treenut allergies, and while he's been fine so far, if something were to happen, I like to have my car handy as opposed to relying on the metro. We buy tickets off Stub Hub and sit in the 400s.
Come to think of it though, even though his school is fairly diverse, out of the 12 kids on his LL team, he and a half/white/half-Latino kid are the only kids of color. |
I don't understand this way of thinking. Why should people feel ashamed?! |
In your world, it seems like "diversity" means "needs more African-Americans." Despite the drop-off in participation by African-Americans, baseball is more diverse now than it has ever been: https://sabr.org/bioproj/topic/baseball-demographics-1947-2012. Please remember that baseball as a sport is popular around the world. There are professional leagues in North American, Central America, Japan, Korea, Australia, Italy, the Netherlands and, I think, Taiwan. |
Well holy shit, football will go under. |
|
If you're a minority and want to go to a baseball game, you should go to a baseball game.
- A Minority |
Thanks. I am the PP and was basing my comment on info from an analyst from last year (or maybe the year before). Happy to hear there are more women now (or maybe the analyst was just wrong). |

Football is still enjoyable without alcohol. |
