That's a very lazy opinion. Anyone who actually lives in Arlington knows that Wakefield is a very good high school. It does have a large population of immigrants and lower S ES students. The population of middle-class children is growing and will continue to grow. The farms population is only 10% higher than WL. As more middle-class young families move in, Wakefield will begin to look more like a WL in about 10 to 15 years. Some think sooner. I'm fine either way, as my child excels anywhere. We prioritize our time together as a family. That's the very best choice we can make for our kids. It's a shame when people let fear get in the way of family. |
FARMs population at Wakefield is actually on the lower end for Northern Virginia high schools. It hovers between 35%-40% FARMs. Wakefield is not majority low income as others have speculated on this forum. But unless boundariesl change dramatically, Wakeifled will still have fewer single family homes in its boundaries than either Yorktown or W-L, so it will likely still be different demographically from the other Arlington high schools. |
Huh. I thought it was closer to 45 but either way you are correct . The school has a good vibe though, and I really feel comfortable when I'm there. The kids are pretty low-key and it's not the same kind of posturing and hooligan antics that you see at schools like Wilson. Arlington has a lot to offer. |
| You can gamble with your children but stick with great schools of 9 and higher or your child may be shortchanged |
give it a rest |
Wakefield is 46% FARMS and underperforms compared to other area schools with similar poverty rates. The SAT scores for white students are in the bottom five for APS/FCPS/FCCPS/ACPS, and the scores for Asians, blacks and Hispanics are in the bottom three. |
it's called liberal white guilt.... this site is full of it and none of them make any sense. |
Please explain. |
My Korean friends will not send their kids to school with Latinos. That is because they are racist. Not complicated. |
They've got to justify their commutes. Everyone lies about their travel times on this board. Their "9" schools don't make up for the lack of face time with their children, and the added stress on the family. |
Perhaps, but not as often as the people who lie about the number of middle-class families supposedly are moving into their crappy school districts. |
See... There are actual facts and figure to support both how much time people are spending on their cars, and how many ( so many! ) middle class families are buying into these "terrible" school districts. So... Yeah.... The commutes get worse and worse... And my neighborhood gets better and better... |
| For parents with kids at Kenmore and Wakefield, what bad decisions did you make in your lives that has resulted in your children now receiving a substandard education and being on their way to a life of poverty like you, their parents? |
Priced huh? |
I do kind of regret picking Williams over MIT back in 1991....I could have ridden that 90's internet wave to a lot more money. Oh well. You're right, I guess I am living in comparative poverty, Arlington is only the fifth wealthiest county in the country and my household income is only three times the average for the DC area and my kids are only getting the most expensive per-pupil education in the state. You're right, I'm the worst parent ever and I have made terrible, terrible decisions. |
