Wakefield has been one of the lowest performing high schools in NoVa for decades. Mount Vernon and some of the schools in Manassas and Woodbridge are the only ones that are worse.
That's a very lazy opinion. Anyone who actually lives in Arlington knows that Wakefield is a very good high school. It does have a large population of immigrants and lower S ES students. The population of middle-class children is growing and will continue to grow. The farms population is only 10% higher than WL. As more middle-class young families move in, Wakefield will begin to look more like a WL in about 10 to 15 years. Some think sooner. I'm fine either way, as my child excels anywhere. We prioritize our time together as a family. That's the very best choice we can make for our kids. It's a shame when people let fear get in the way of family.
FARMs population at Wakefield is actually on the lower end for Northern Virginia high schools. It hovers between 35%-40% FARMs. Wakefield is not majority low income as others have speculated on this forum. But unless boundariesl change dramatically, Wakeifled will still have fewer single family homes in its boundaries than either Yorktown or W-L, so it will likely still be different demographically from the other Arlington high schools.
Wakefield is 46% FARMS and underperforms compared to other area schools with similar poverty rates. The SAT scores for white students are in the bottom five for APS/FCPS/FCCPS/ACPS, and the scores for Asians, blacks and Hispanics are in the bottom three.
