Maybe the third, but it's not that close to the first two public schools. Parklawn is at the other end of Lincolnia Road and Belvedere is almost in Annandale.

ParkLawn is less than a mile

Not according to google maps it's not. Distances must seem closer to you when you are afraid.

Actually google maps said it is.try again

Sorry but even if you measure from the very tip of the property, which is blocked by a large black fence, the distance to 4710 North Chambliss Street, Alexandria is 1.0 miles. The distance to an actual entrance is even farther. It's a straight shot down Lincolnia, so there is really nothing to dispute.

There will be no large fence around the shelter, the proposed site to the school property is less than a mile. And half a mile to a day care and Catholic school where little kids are outside playing. This is undisputed fact

And the church and Catholic school are on the same grounds.

The only major fact here is you have no clue whatsoever of what you're talking about

OK give me the exact longitude and latitude of the points you are measuring, and the distance. I have measured it three times. The property I was referring to was the school, which actually has a big black fence at that tip. Fact.

And since I am a Catholic, I have no problem saying that we have an obligation to the poor and I am unafraid of my children being within a half mile of them. In fact my children are less than a half mile from homeless people all the time.

It's obvious you're ignorant if the area, there is no big black fence, kids climb over it all the time, it's about three-four feet high. Just a quick drive by shows that.

Not at the corner. You are talking about along the side.

The exact route: 1 mile

There is no large black fence. Route is shorter than a mile as they don't need to cut across Chambliss to get to Lincolnia. Catholic day care and elementary school 1/2 mile and daycare academy less than a mile. Development of residential homes in the 1-2 million range and across Lincolnia houses from 600-700s. So all soft targets for criminals.

Those are the facts

1. If you think that cutting behind the buildings somehow makes the distance appreciably shorter, you are nuts.
2. The fence can be seen from Google Street View. I measured from the very closest tip of the school property just to satisfy you, and the fence there is tall. They can walk farther to a lower section of fence, but that would undermine your attempt to get this trip below 5,280 feet.
3. People living in 1-2 million dollar homes are no more worthy than anyone else. I say this as I type from such a home.
4. There is always a daycare somewhere. I have yet to hear stories of homeless people invading daycares.
5. Homeless people may have issues, but they are not the hardened criminals, and a shelter is not a prison. Half of them are veterans.

Lastly, if you are the Catholic poster, you should be ashamed. I hope you aren't, because you know church teaching on the preferential option for the poor. You know this is not the work of Pope Francis. If it is you, you know better.

By ours also still ignoring the fact there is another elementary school half a mile away, with NO fences. And they do walks in the neighborhood.

A lot of homeless are mentally unstable and drug addicts. They're dangerous for children and seniors

Easy, they have no place to go during the day

Pop on over to Reston and see where they go. Story hour at the library? Go out with a realtor? https://www.restonnow.com/2015/12/07/homeless-man-found-squatting-in-swanky-west-market-home/

I see on one willing to propose their zip codes as an alternative location...funny how that works.

OP, you're not going to get a bunch of sheltered, privileged, white, spoiled stay at home moms who send their kids to Bishop OConnel admit they wouldn't like it either. Just live with those facts.

On a side, I see your problem and wouldn't want a bunch of homeless drug addicts running around my neighborhood anyways. As a FFX county resident, I note there is plenty of space behind the police station in Columbia Pike and the FFX county government buildings. At your next townhall propose those as alternative sites. Putting this next to schools and worse, a senior citizens home is stupid.

I already live near a homeless shelter. So no need. I also used to live near a large homeless camp in DC. No worries. Half the neighborhood kids go to school three blocks from a homeless shelter. I have yet to hear anyone mention this as an issue for the school. I have also worked with homeless people and so I don't need you to tell me what they are like. I also do not need you to tell me what the neighborhood is like because I used to live there. I picked shell casings on the playground of Patrick Henry. I know about the assaults and the drug busts that go on near Beauregard and Little River Turnpike. I'd worry more about the residents than some homeless people who, by the way, live in your neighborhood already.

This is garden variety nimbyism. So clutch your pearls or your pandora necklace or whatever else it is that you have going, but the county should not revolve around your fear of what you do not know.

And a senior center. With a daycare, elementary school, private schools as less than 1/10 a mile away I find this an atrocious move. Citizens of the area are concerned for their kids safety as well as the safety of their elderly realitives in the senior center. My daughter goes to the very good Catholic school that is about three hundred yards away. This sickens my stomach.

It sickens your stomach. What is wrong with you? Just b/c they are homeless you believe their are all violent criminals. WOW.

You are pretty awful OP.

But lets just say you are right, homeless shelters have a curfew and typically the guests can't come and go as they please throughout the night, so based on your judgment of the homeless isn't it better to have them be inside a shelter safely away from the kids and elderly?

BTW if your kid goes to a "very good Catholic school" there is a pretty good chance there is at least one homeless child there on scholarship. Speaking of your daughter being in Catholic school I am pretty sure they are not teachering her to be judgmental and sickened by the less fortunate. Maybe you should go to school with your daughter tomorrow.

I have an idea, let's move it to your neighborhood right next to the school and see how you feel. I think that's a great idea. There's no screening these people to see if they're mentally unstable which a lot are. This is a safety issue and as other have noted it brings crime

I live in courthouse, there is homeless shelter by the metro about 1/2 mile from where I live and 3 or 4 blocks from the elementary school. I am fine with it.
Try again!

NP. And homeless people wander around Clarendon all the time. No impact on home prices. One dude is really loud, though. Local flavor. Keeps the spineless millennials on their toes.

Clarendon is densely commercial. I think that's ideal for a homeless shelter. No issue there so long as it isn't next to a school library or senior center.

We just explained there was a shelter in Courthouse right near an elementary school.

PPs point was in close-in "nice" neighborhoods like Courthouse and Clarendon there are shelters and homeless people and it has not impacted crime or housing prices.

It's in Courthouse which is less popular for buyers and renters than Clarendon. The shelter has ruined the Reston library. Where people used to park outdoors is now becoming apt's.

It is in Courthouse, but homeless folks are highly visible in Clarendon proper all the time.

I am not a liberal and I don't want homeless shelters in VA. That's what Maryland is for.

So, you want to ship out all the homeless out of VA to MD?

As a MD resident, I would gladly pay to build a wall to keep you Virginians out. I thought the state motto was "VA is for lovers", but just only if you have money, apparently.

You should build a walk to keep yourselves in. Most of us don't want your crime or drugs

lol ... because VA has no crime or drugs ... lol. They do sure have college shootings, a gun store next to an ES, and now apparently homeless shelters next to schools. Lovely. I've, driven through certain parts of VA, and it was very scary. Yes, there are scary parts in MD, too, as there are in probably most states, but I don't pretend it doesn't exist.

Other than Western Maryland and Eastern Shore, the whole state is a cesspool. Let's be honest

To an outsider from the west coast with a spouse from Europe, VA has a reputation of being a "gun loving backward state". These types of incidences just fuel that stereotype. I'm sure there are some lovely people in VA, though.

And to most people, "Europe" has a reputation for incompetence, super low birth rates, racism, etc.

As is the fact that Moncure is now right across Columbia Pike from even more expensive homes than anything near Landmark.
