And a senior center. With a daycare, elementary school, private schools as less than 1/10 a mile away I find this an atrocious move. Citizens of the area are concerned for their kids safety as well as the safety of their elderly realitives in the senior center. My daughter goes to the very good Catholic school that is about three hundred yards away. This sickens my stomach.

It sickens your stomach. What is wrong with you? Just b/c they are homeless you believe their are all violent criminals. WOW.

You are pretty awful OP.

But lets just say you are right, homeless shelters have a curfew and typically the guests can't come and go as they please throughout the night, so based on your judgment of the homeless isn't it better to have them be inside a shelter safely away from the kids and elderly?

BTW if your kid goes to a "very good Catholic school" there is a pretty good chance there is at least one homeless child there on scholarship. Speaking of your daughter being in Catholic school I am pretty sure they are not teachering her to be judgmental and sickened by the less fortunate. Maybe you should go to school with your daughter tomorrow.

I have an idea, let's move it to your neighborhood right next to the school and see how you feel. I think that's a great idea. There's no screening these people to see if they're mentally unstable which a lot are. This is a safety issue and as other have noted it brings crime

I live in courthouse, there is homeless shelter by the metro about 1/2 mile from where I live and 3 or 4 blocks from the elementary school. I am fine with it.
Try again!

NP. And homeless people wander around Clarendon all the time. No impact on home prices. One dude is really loud, though. Local flavor. Keeps the spineless millennials on their toes.

Clarendon is densely commercial. I think that's ideal for a homeless shelter. No issue there so long as it isn't next to a school library or senior center.

We just explained there was a shelter in Courthouse right near an elementary school.

PPs point was in close-in "nice" neighborhoods like Courthouse and Clarendon there are shelters and homeless people and it has not impacted crime or housing prices.

It's in Courthouse which is less popular for buyers and renters than Clarendon. The shelter has ruined the Reston library. Where people used to park outdoors is now becoming apt's.

It is in Courthouse, but homeless folks are highly visible in Clarendon proper all the time.

Clarendon is a highly commercialized area with a high police presence. This area is not, and Fairfax County said they would not be putting any more officers here for security. The homeless shelter in Arlington has a police officer on site Fairfax Will not said they will not be doing that. When I find funny is when the original proposed site was on the Fairfax Arlington border it was Arlington residents you came out full force. Putting the shelter right next to the senior center right down the road from two elementary schools is just plain stupid

Let's move it to McLean or Oakton instead. They have less of a crowded infrastructure then our area.
I'm sure the SAHM's there won't mind

I am a sahp in McLean and I would welcome a homeless shelter in my neighborhood.

OMG you are talking about the corner of Beauregard and Little River Turnpike. I don't know what "highly commercialized" means to you, but strip malls, office buildings, an interstate and a large somewhat decaying shopping center are my signs of "highly commercialized".

You know how I know this board is full of hypocrites? Is because at the board meeting where this was proposed there tons people from the community. Place was pretty full and out of everyone there only three people supported his move. Ironically enough none of those people live in the Mason District. It was all people from outside the area we're OK with this. And this isn't just a bunch of privileged white people either! This was Hispanics, caucasian, asians, Latin Americans, and various other races. The neighborhood just doesn't want that here around senior citizen homes and schools. I am willing to bet my next paycheck and that if he was going to be put up in any of the other communities hear the same outrage would occur if it's with in Fairfax County

Clearly you have not been to this kind of thing. It's always the protesters who show up. Very few people come out to advocate for something that is OK to them unless they really badly want that thing.

Find me a place in Fairfax that is not within one mile of a school or a daycare in any direction. You can't. This is nonsense.

More than you obviously, if it wasn't that big an issue people wouldn't have shown up. More to the point, only people for this don't live here

Van dorn. Or is that too far for homeless people to walk? I was under the impression that they were going to be walking from school to school, hopping fences and terrorizing the students then settling I at the lobby of the old folks home to watch tv while they divide up what they stole that day.

You seem to be new to the concept of NIMBYism.

they would be walking down Duke street and several miles to Van Dorn, then down Eisenhour.

Schools are .5 and less than a mile away. They can easily walk to the Total Wine, 7-11 or the VA ABC

Oh I understand, which is why it isn't next to Arlington, or the county building where it should be. Police have stated it will cause crime increases - no one sensible would want this.
