Is “Girl Dinner” really a thing for you?

Mass media is manufacturing consent for average Americans not being able to afford groceries and proper meals. You can’t afford a steak or burgers, so your family is eating hamburger helper. That’s not trendy or chic - no matter how Wapo, the Times, or social media influencers spin it - that is brutal austerity and economic decline.

I don't call it 'girl dinner,' but that is usually how I eat when no one else is home. My mom does, too, since my dad has passed. The most involved either of us get is something like a scrambled egg sandwich. Or I'll toss beans and a tortilla in the microwave and then add avocado + hot sauce.

Coined by Olivia Maher in 2023, it represents a low-effort, aesthetic, and indulgent way to eat alone. While popular as a liberating, stress-free self-care ritual, it has faced criticism for potentially glamorizing low-calorie grazing or restricting eating habits.

Examples of Girl Dinner
Classic: Cheese, crackers, salami, olives, and grapes.
Beige: Buttered noodles, popcorn, and garlic toast.
Snack-based: Pickles, nuts, cheese, and fruit.
Leftovers/Odd Pairings: Yogurt, hummus with veggies, or wine with crackers.

Do you do this?

It was “coined by” a 200k follower middle aged Jewish influencer with a PR team, huh? Riiiiight

This isn’t “girl dinner” of any other clueless neologism… it is just a traditional dinner in a chunk of Europe. In Germany it would be called abendbrot.

I kind of feel the opposite. People think that if they're not having big meals with x, y and z they are not eating a proper diet, so they buy and buy and waste so much money on groceries. In reality there is zero wrong with having an omelette with spinach and mushrooms for dinner, and that is dirt cheap.

My girl dinner is "leftovers" or "sandwiches" or premade ravioli with jarred Rao sauces. .

The rare occasions I am home alone without a kid or spouse around, I have "mom dinner" -- eating whatever is in the fridge/pantry that requires minimal prep and cleanup and listening to the sweet, sweet silence of no one complaining.

We just call this "dinner."

They’re conditioning the peasants for a decade of austerity.
