Is “Girl Dinner” really a thing for you?

I love eating like this when I'm on my own for dinner. Cheese and crackers, an apple or pear, olives, some salami or prosciutto... yum.

DH has his own version of Boy Dinner. Omelette with cheese and whatever random stuff is in the fridge.

This has always existed. It’s not at all a new concept but as usual, someone on social media believes they’ve coined something new and the sheeple declare it to be the latest “trend.”

Before it was girl dinner, it was an example of Secret Single Behavior on SATC.

It’s just…eating.

I think people might get confused over one thing - grazing doesn't necessarily mean less calories or healthier meals. It really depends what you're eating.

It’s not about cutting calories. It’s about snacks for dinner when no one is looking.

For you, maybe. But the implication behind the term "girl dinner" is that women look for less caloric options, or healthier options. Snacking by its very nature can be a slippery slope because while your brain is thinking "oh, I'm just grazing", your body is picking high-calorie foods and eating too much of it, and then you may end up eating too fatty or too salty. A cheese or charcuterie board for example, isn't a great choice. The OP's only healthy suggestion was yogurt of hummus with crackers.

Sorry for taking a lecturing tone. I don't mean to offend anyone, but I've seen women think they're eating healthy and then wonder why they're gaining weight and feeling blah.

No, the implication behind "girl dinner" is that I am freed from the burden of cooking for a night, and I want to make as little effort as possible.

100% this.

See how no one person gets to define what “girl dinner” means? The above is what it means to me. If you don’t like the phrase, don’t use it. I don’t walk around saying “girl dinner,” but on a night when I don’t have to cook for anyone and only have to please myself, some Gouda, crackers, cucumber slices, and a glass of Prosecco, that’s what I’m gonna do.

I’ll keep my girl dinner of Triscuits, cheese, grapes and chocolate any day.

It’s called bowl of slop and Sysco slop.

Coined by Olivia Maher in 2023, it represents a low-effort, aesthetic, and indulgent way to eat alone. While popular as a liberating, stress-free self-care ritual, it has faced criticism for potentially glamorizing low-calorie grazing or restricting eating habits.

Examples of Girl Dinner
Classic: Cheese, crackers, salami, olives, and grapes.
Beige: Buttered noodles, popcorn, and garlic toast.
Snack-based: Pickles, nuts, cheese, and fruit.
Leftovers/Odd Pairings: Yogurt, hummus with veggies, or wine with crackers.

Do you do this?

It’s a trend because Americans under 40 can’t cook, are lazy, and are slobs. Give me a break that you’re so busy and tired after a fake WFH email job.

I’ve eaten this way for years. I eat breakfast, lunch, then I just have a snack after kids in bed.

We do this on family vacations when we’ve had a big lunch and don’t want to have big dinner, go to a restaurant etc,,,especially if our hotel has some basic kitchen facilities. We’ll go to a grocery store and get some veggies, apple, cheese, prosciutto, crackers - it’s very relaxing

Absolutely. Actually DH and I do a cheese/charcuterie board dinner, usually with sliced apples or pears, every couple of weeks. I also do it when I am alone, or have other weird combinations that only I like. And when I travel, which is often for work, I will get the Starbucks protein box, which essentially pre-packaged girl dinner, for lunch or dinner.

I was at a cafeteria style place recently and the only thing that looked appealing to me was onion rings. So that was my lunch!

Do it at least twice a week when DH and DS are at a late soccer practice and I've been doing it far longer than it was a tiktok trend. For me, it's not about cutting calories or restricting. I just genuinely enjoy "snack" meals. Last night I had cheese, crackers, green tomato jam, snap peas, carrots, and tomatoes with a dijon vinaigrette, and a yogurt with berries.

I love cheese but no that will never be the base of my dinner.

Cheese is the basis of DH and my special dinners. Good cheese, crackers, maybe some cocktail shrimp.
We aren't in the "hot square meal" mindset.

But actually the Girl Dinner" reminded me of my childhood when my parents were going out to dinner ir an event. I got to pick the "TV Dinner" I wanted. I loved the separate compartments and things we never had.
My favorite for a while was scallops. Amazingly they weren't bad.

That boy kibble story made me want to throw up.
