I posted suggestions earlier in the thread, before I am accused of criticizing without offering a suggestion.

Which one did you post and please detail how it fits the following criteria:

- OP will look really good
- OP is not talk
- OP is not super thin but size 8 hourglass
- the wedding reception involves a swanky urban setting with dancing

One of the better options posted but still not it. OP is only 5-6 so this will be too long on her. The full skirt could be overwhelming. And not everyone can pull off strapless.

Beautiful and so classy.

Agreed - I love this one.

HOW can you love a drab colored ankle-length dress with a neckline to the chin and cut like bad office wear??! HOW?? when OP says she wants a revenge look for a trendy urban wedding with dancing????

This whole thread is a wild ride. But, yes, I strongly agree that that dress is the opposite vibe of what OP is looking for and I do not think it will do her body type any favors.

OP is asking for dress advice on mommy board where most of the posters are decades older than her. So I am not sure about her fashion sense either.

As a practical matter, I don’t think I would have spent $250 for a dress for a one night event when I was in my 20s and 30s. I would have spent a lot less, and I tend to think dresses for younger women cost less because they on average for less to spend.

I posted earlier in this thread; I am in my 30s and $250 for a dress is about right imo. Any cheaper and it's going to be one of those flammable looking things better suited for a college formal. My sister is getting married in a few months and my dress was about $300. And it's just a basic lined chiffon gown.

A dress for your a sister’s wedding falls into a completely different category, in my opinion.

OP, I think you should do the second one here with the shoulders covered. It's modest but sexy, elegant but trendy, and I think it would look good on an hourglass figure with scrappy sandals and perfect hair/makeup.

DP. I love this dress but it seems really summery to me. That’s probably why it’s on sale at Nordstrom.

Not the poster who shared that dress but I think in the black it could work for winter.

5-6 in 4 inch heels is perfectly tall enough for this length. Or get it hemmed for like $10 so it fits perfectly.

I'll be attending with my boyfriend and my cheating ex husband will also be there. I'm late 30s, 5'6in, size 8, hourglass shape.

Any recs on dresses or where to look? I haven't been to a wedding in ages. Ideally budget under $250.

Whats your best asset? Legs? Shape? Back? Are you busty or mid sized? 5'6'' is not petite but you dont want to be swallowed by fabric. An hourglass shape is the most desirable but you want to focus on that with your best asset.

95% of looks aside from facial beauty is having a hot bod.

OPs time is better spent hitting the gym and using RTR than fretting for days about a dress.

Furthermore despite posting her size and weight, we don’t know enough to help her.

What colors does she look good/bad in?
Big boobs or small boobs?
Belly/no belly?
“Hourglass” is vague and often more aspirational than descriptive.

I’m the person who asked about the dress price. I agree - focusing on exercise/diet, getting your hair blown out, nails done, skin scrubbed, and good makeup application will have much more of an effect than any particular dress. Most guys in their 30s don’t care if it’s a flammable dress a college girl would wear.

Anonymous wrote:All the long dresses in silk and poly are terrible. Unless op is 5 10 and with a concave stomach, these dresses look terrible. You want a fixed waist, show a bit of boob but not too much, and length just above knee, just below knee or midi.

And wearing a revenge dress is totally a legit goal. I’ve been very happily married 25 years and guarantee that if I was going to an event where I thought I’d see my crappy college boyfriend who treated me like crap, not only would I want to “revenge dress” him, my DH would probably be all in on my behalf, making sure he looked awesome too. That’s true love!

+1 I'm with you!
And incidentally I did run into my crappy college boyfriend at an event.. my husband ended up chatting with him and announced "I really like that guy" and my sister busted out laughing. Then he looked at me and said "don't tell me you dated him. I don't want to know." At least I looked great!
