Everyone puts a credit or debit card out and the waiter picks one to pay the whole check.

That’s the dumbest freaking thing I’ve ever heard.

I won't lie this experience has been completely embarrassing and demoralizing but I opening as well. I should have inquired more about our finances as a household sooner rather than later but at least we can begin to repair the damage

Glad you found out now. I added my husband, who didn't work or pay his bill, to my tax return and government kept my money. Comes out the idiot had not paid his student loans. Made him pay them back and never trusted anyone again with money.
I even refused to marry the next person for the fear of him messing up my finances among other things.
Money had always been reason for fights, but freedom if you have it.

I can guess what it is, but I would shut down anyone who proposed such nonsense. How tacky and presumptuous can one be?

It’s not tacky at all. In my social circle we often argue about who’s paying, as in no, I’m getting it, no I’m getting it, on and on. So this method works well.

+ 1
We do it because everyone WANTS to pay.

If you're willing to offer me constructive advice I will take it but if you're here to just label me as a troll or give Starkey responses then please don't reply.

Grown women don’t play foolish games like credit card roulette. You are not persuasive.

Disagree. My friends have never played this but I wouldn't be opposed because we've all treated each other from time to time. Paying $400 once when you've had previous outings not paying at all evens out.

Unless you're the unlucky one whose card continually gets picked

I've worked in credit card as well.

Some cards require over-limit protection and others allow the customer to opt in or out of it.

Without this turned on, some cards allow customers to go over the limit if their credit rating is good and they think they will eventually pay - especially if they have gone over before and paid it. This is about customer service to not inconvenience the customer, but mainly because the card company makes more. If the card is over, there are increased fees and higher interest rates and the minimum payment would be a lot higher. And the high utilization will impact the customer's future credit rating making it harder for them to get another credit card and they will be forced to pay it off and keep it.

This sounds fun actually. Even if this person is a troll I and going to do this next time I go out to dinner with my friends.

Same. We play this game often when out to eat. Splitting checks is a pain that none of us want to endure.

Actually I thought this was a troll post but reading more into it I actually believe the OP

Splitting the check evenly per person/couple is pretty simple and would avoid being the unlucky one who might repeatedly get picked to pay lol

Where's the pain? Hand the waiter a card per couple/individual and ask them to split it evenly. CC roulette is stupid.

I’m rich and I love being with other rich people where we just take turns picking up tabs and/or jostle for the check, but I firmly believe this “credit card roulette” thing is fake. For one, no server would ever participate. For another, why get the credit cards out at all?

I would be horrified if a friend suggested this and would immediately just pick up the check myself. I do think it’s fake though.

Yuck.

When I go out with friends, I always pay cash. I know, cash is obsolete bla bla bla. But the servers really like it, especially since I tip well in cash. SO I guess I am missing out on this activity.

That's insane.

This reminds me of the movie "The Ice Storm." Anyone else seen it? (Hiint: another variation of the roulette.)

When I worked on wall st, it was always popular with the young analysts and first year associates. Some of the more immature traders would do it at happy hours after running up big wine tabs

I laughed because the last time I played I was a very young, single consultant. I've never heard of a single person over the age of 26 or so doing it.

OP here. We just finished putting in a new master bathroom and put most of the costs on our credit cards. Interest rate is currently 7.99% introductory and then jumps to 29.99% in 12 months. We figured we would hold at low interest and pay off later. But we may have overextended our limit on the card.

Uhhh I'm sorry but no, you are not the OP. That distinction goes to me and me only, Larla. You do not speak for us, you do not know our lives and you do not know what me and DH are going through currently.

At any rate, I have started to take a deep dive into our finances and I've come to realize DH lied about more than just credit cards. He is apparently further in debt than I imagined. There were several purchases that he made without my knowledge that total over $20,000 along with student loans and another loan for a pontoon boat he purchased, we are seriously over leveraged.

My mom is an accountant and I will be speaking with her this weekend to figure out our options but I am seriously mad at my husband. We are currently not speaking with each other and my sister thinks I should consider divorcing him due to our poor finances now that everything is coming into focus

Uh, no. Stop sock puppeting you teenage poser. I’m the real OP and youre a despicable troll. Suddenly you’re now contemplating divorce?!? Mad at your DH? Are you fückîng kidding us with your BS about a pontoon boat?!?!? Get out of here you POS troll!!
