Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
Oh gosh, why would a large public schools including W schools have lower scores than smaller private schools that can curate their own student body... hm.. let me think... 🤔 |
Private schools don't have to submit those stats to MD. That's the beauty (or not) of private schools. In fact, their teachers don't even have to be certified. |
For the 1,000th time: I’m responding to posters who say private schools are inferior to MCPS. |
Private schools have to submit ERB scores. And their teachers absolutely have to be certified. But sure — the absence of state testing OF COURSE means private schools are inferior to MCPS. You are so convincing. |
| Ok here. What happened to this thread?? |
Private school teachers do not need to be certified in MD. https://www.ed.gov/media/document/operating-regulations-comparison-chart-8-17-17-webpagepdf And I was responding to the PP who wanted to see scores from private schools so they could compare it to public. My point is that those numbers are not published by the state like they do for public schools. |
What happened is that inevitably, some private school parent comes onto a public school forum to bash all public schools, and say how their expensive private is so much better. |
Private schools have to be certified by Maryland educational authorities. So stop making it sound like private schools can do whatever they want. Without data, it’s simply stupid to proclaim that MCPS is superior to private schools. |
What happened is that MCPS parents get very defensive whenever anyone suggests there could be a better alternative to this vaunted school system. |

Seriously I am looking for any claim to back up your assertion that MCPS is better than most of the private schools. We are considering moving our kids to Bullis or Saint Andrews in the coming years. They are still having a great experience at our local Wootton cluster Elementary and Middle School‘s, but the issues are starting to show in the middle school and it Wootton and I am getting increasingly worried. Do you really think that they will be OK if I leave them there? I have no doubt that with parent like myself monitoring their progress and staying on top of their schoolwork and helping propel them to excellence they will be OK, I just don’t want them to be dragged down by a broken system around them.. I also don’t want to pay $60,000 a year for something that I could get by propping up the MCPS experience. Thoughts?
They are two middle of the road white kids with involved parents that both have advanced degrees and are 1 percent income earners (don’t at me, it’s just our combined HHI). We wanted to stay since the kids are so happy but just not sure. |
Exactly!!! That’s why I resort to asking questions here as an MCPS parent. No one will answer and everyone gets so defensive!!!!! |
That poster made a blanket statement to which you responded also with a blanket statement. Some private schools aren't as good as public schools, and some public schools aren't as good as some private schools. But, in general, a small wealthy private school will have higher scores all around than a diverse large public school because 1. money and 2. private schools can curate their student body the way they want and counsel out the troublemakers. Publics cannot do that. So, you comparing QO to Sidwell is ridiculous. BTW, I do bash MCPS on here a lot. But, I realize that MCPS is a very large diverse public school system that will never have the kind of scores and outcome that is the same as a small wealthy private school. |
Not at all. MCPS parents have no problem bashing MCPS but they will get defensive if you try to compare a large diverse public system with a tiny rich private school. |
No. What I said is that good private schools are better than MCPS. I did not make a blanket statement. If me picking Sidwell is unreasonable to you, I’m happy to pick another private school. But the reality is that even the supposedly “top” MCPS schools are struggling. We saw that in the Bethesda magazine cover story recently, and we’re seeing that in the MD state report card. That’s really the problem. MCPS is struggling nearly across the board. |
? per the link, in MD, private school teachers are not required to be certified. They can get certification, but they are not required to get it. |
