MOCO BOE update: Beidleman Report summary

Anonymous wrote:The BOE can’t say the teachers and principals didn’t warn them. They chose to bury their heads in the sand then, and it’s why they’re in the situation they’re in now. There’s a sad disconnect between educators’ lived experience and what the Board seems to be aware of.

Some mcps Staff were in a training where they were anonymously asked to evaluate whether they felt psychologically safe in their jobs. 70 percent who were present said "no."

He was either protected because he had strategic relationships higher up or because the system is so broken that the oversight mechanisms failed. It’s one or the other.

Or the oversight mechanisms didn't even exist in the first place, and nobody noticed or cared.

*sigh* The investigation summary report already says that the policies and procedures there WERE in place, weren't followed. And yes, there was some areas were there wasn't a clear or formal process in place, such as escalating whether a candidate was under investigation while simultaneously being considered for promotion, didn't exist.

But it's clear, according to BOE President Silvestre, that there were serious failing by several people in MCPS leadership and oversight. So I don't know why you're feigning otherwise.

These problems in MCPS are not new problems. MCPS staff have a long history of ignoring complaints of sexual harassment and bullying. The Washington Post reported that complaints about Beidleman stretches for 6 years. This raises concerns about training investigators have and the willingness of MCPS to ignore complaints.

The fact no one filed formal complaint is mind boggling. Wouldn’t these educators take the proper steps to file complaints? Yet now they are screaming that mcps officials didn’t take proper steps before deciding to promote him. So who is really at fault here? It seems EVERYONE including the so called victims that didn’t file formal complaints. Even in the judicial system you can’t just go up to a judge and say someone harassed me. You have to follow judicial protocol. This is mind boggling that you all expect mcps to follow protocols based off of informal complaints.

Some did file formal complaints. Some attempted to but were dissuaded by central office staff.

For obvious reasons Admin never trained staff on how to report admin abuse. MCPS reporting sucks. Schools and the system don’t actually want any bad reports, so they had behind bad reporting systems and structures.

The reporting structures that do exist make now effort to protection staff anonymously or from possible retaliation. Admin can easily target a staff member they don’t like through the five year teacher evaluation system, the PAR system, or just by reorganizing school classes. Move a teacher to electives, and then cancel the electives so that teacher has to change schools. I have seen it happen a few times.

The reality is that the teacher evaluation system is so openended it can easily be used against staff. One parent complaint or SPED complaint for example can be used against a staff member and put a letter it that teachers personnel file.

Where did you get that NO ONE filed a formal complaint? Some did and some wanted to but were dissuaded by MCPS officials.

Your “facts” are mistaken. There were many formal complaints filed in addition to anonymous and informal complaints. The history of retaliation was a factor that discouraged some from filing formal complaints.

AMEN! She does not speak for me.

Then you go talk to the media.

Exactly! Anonymous people who are too chicken sh*t to come out of hiding are quick to criticize the people who have the guts to name and shame in the press.

If you don't have the courage to speak out, then at least respect those who do.

We do. I’ve spoken to many news outlets and you’ll never know my name because I’m not attention seeking. It’s entirely possible to help without sensationalizing yourself. She not only seeks attention, she looks absolutely insane every time she opens her mouth, undermining the actual work that needs to be done.

+1

NP here and honestly you need to redirect your anger at MCPS and the BoE. They're the reason why we are where we are. Not this Dawn person.

DP...my anger is directly at MCPS. On the same exact note, Dawn needs to stay out of everything. She discredits teachers because as previous posters have said..she appears drunk or incoherent. We do NOT want her speaking on behalf of us. She's an embarrassment.

Seems like a lot of excuses here and very few real facts.

The super reports to the BOE. The state superintendent (who's been having his own problems lately) and state BOE oversee at the state level.

And now he's outta there:

Wow! Good on Gov. Moore and the state on pushing him out.

I wonder what that means for Monifa.

She'll probably throw her hat in the ring.

Good victim blaming and shaming. No one knows the formal process to report. It’s so deeply hidden that it’s almost impossible to do.

Just remember, the purpose of HR is to protect the employer,NOT THE EMPLOYEE.

Also, Safe Schools is not touted as a “informal” complaint. Shame on mcps and the state for getting the safe schools complaints and not doing anything with them.

Stop blaming the victims. Blame the system for covering its own and letting harm continue time and time again.

+1 It’s the same for complaints from the public. You can raise an issue up to the Principal and Director of the school, yet an investigation doesn’t happen unless you fill out the correct form. It doesn’t matter if you put the complaint in writing or on the wrong MCPS form.

The process is designed so complaints go to the wind. It’s complicated and no one at Central Office cares even when it’s about sexual harassment and bullying of students.
Anonymous
I brought a complaint and met with HR, and no one ever mentioned that there was a form I needed to fill out. The system is not designed to encourage accountability. It is designed to protect themselves.
Anonymous
Same here. I came to admin about issues with violence bullying etc in the classroom, I wrote students up in the system and spoke to admin directly. I was just gaslighted about how violence is their culture bs and ignored. Then I was nonrenewed. Then they lied to the department of labor and told unemployment that I resigned/quit so they could block my benefits. It's a toxic hell on earth to be a teacher here. It's not healthy for students or staff.
