Unless you have material, unique knowledge re an urgent situation that is going to happen regardless of the lapse in federal funding, you will not be excepted.

I am an attorney in an office of 25. Every shutdown-eve, we compile a list of which matters will remain active during the furlough. If one of those matters is yours, we'll tell you that you excepted from the start or that you may receive a call during the furlough to inform you that you are excepted. Often, the excepted period will be marked for only a day or even a few hours.

Zero.

My agency would probably do it.

I don’t recall the details but I thought a CR in place on April 30 basically cuts total discretionary funding to FY 2022 levels, which is what the freedom caucus wants. An annualized CR is a more likely outcome than getting the Senate to enact appropriations below the levels agreed to in May.

The problem is that the Freedom Caucus wants funding cut below the levels already agreed to AND they want their border security legislation too.

The only way we avoid a shutdown is if McCarthy can convince a coalition of Ra and Ds to support a bill but trying to pass a bill without the Freedom Caucus could end his speakership

No, that is not going to happen. The Freedom Caucus is larger than it used to be, but they are not strong enough to oust McCarthy. They threaten that every time that McCarthy has worked for bipartisan acceptance of something that has been stonewalled by the far right. He's gotten a few wins past them and they still have not ousted him. The only time he pushes something bipartisan is when he gets enough moderate Republican support to offset a potential loss of Speakership. The man knows his political warfare and he will not push anything through unless he has enough R votes to prevent a speakership battle. Once he gets that level of support, he can push it through because he knows that the Freedom Caucus will not be able to oust him.

So, it isn't just getting enough votes to pass something. And when it comes to preventing the government shutdown, he will be able to do that. It just matters what concessions he'll have to get from the Democrats to appease the less extreme Republicans to get them to vote with him and also prevent them from siding with the far right to oust him from the speakership. A hard line to toe but he's managed it a couple of times recently and those were harder sells than preventing a government shutdown. He'll be able to do it. It's just a question of how much concession from less Conservative Republicans and Democrats will be necessary.

After they couldn’t get the defense bill on the floor this looks like rose colored projections

Anyone on the Hill want to share light on shutdown situation? Are we thinking it's a yes?

DP. It’s going to happen. McCarthy is literally cursing during meetings with the Rep caucus. Goldman Sachs predicts 3 week shutdown.

That or you work on something which simply cannot stop happening for weeks at a time ever. (Former computer security contractor who has worked straight through every previous shutdown because IT in general and security in particular is almost always excepted. So glad I’ve left government and no longer have to worry about my paycheck being delayed 1-2 months.)

Agreed -- I think mine would too to get a position filled.

So no CR?

DH is excepted and it sucks. He can't take a planned personal day (which was important) and will have to do the work of those who are furloughed. I'm not saying they shouldn't award backpay but it would be nice if those that were stuck got additional compensation for the stress of covering.

No need to be a jerk, and it's not an easy or clean answer.
Generally, anything that is related to health and safety of people or things will be excepted. But there's a ton of wiggle room in there. During a previous shutdown I worked on an active non-human NASA mission. We weren't excepted, but our contractors continued working. So the mission continued. However, when there was a major problem and they needed NASA approval to do something to protect the hardware, we were allowed to work as long as we only focused on the actual problem, and not other mission, but not safety, stuff.

Isn’t there still a couple weeks left? I think they’ll pull together a CR last minute. Going to be a lot of wasted time over it though.

My goal would be to have a staycation - gym, relax, TV, and unwind. What about you?

Knowing you will likely get paid, for doing nothing....

How about going through the process to be certified as a substitute teacher in your local public school system?

Contribute to the greater good of your community?

Eh, McCarthy made a lot of promises to a bunch of Republicans; steep price to pay for his speaker position

Pfffft. I am available for work. If they can't get their act together to enable them to direct work in a way that is legally permitted, I am not going to run around looking for other ways to prove myself as a public servant.

NP. Or, just hear me out, how about heading off to a early autumn vacation?! DH and I are empty nesters and have earned some nice time alone.
The schools can take care of themselves. Also our kids went to private so I’m really not invested in publics.
