Official Government Shutdown 2023 Thread

Anyone know what happens if I decide to take another job during the shutdown? Can I still give notice and separate? Ugh.

I’m going to start my maternity leave in October. My position is also one that has been deemed exempt in previous shutdowns (this will be my first one though). Anyone know if this will have any impact on parental leave?

Will we still accrue annual and sick leave during a government shutdown?

yes

We’re already starting to postpone and shelve work that we can’t leave hanging. Very frustrating.

My goal would be to have a staycation - gym, relax, TV, and unwind. What about you?

Knowing you will likely get paid, for doing nothing....

How about going through the process to be certified as a substitute teacher in your local public school system?

Contribute to the greater good of your community?

Because you can’t just take a side hussle. You need to have outside work cleared by your agency. Which isn’t going to approve drawing double salary.

Substitute teachers aren’t contributing to the community, they’re contributing to the schools. That’s nice and all but it’s not a public service, rather it papers over bad staffing decisions by the schools.

I want this, selfishly.

+1. We had our pre-shutdown meeting put on our calendars today. I have never had one scheduled more than 2 days before a shutdown before. Not good.

And I’ll take a long weekend with an extra couple days off. We are sprinting to meet end of fiscal year targets right now. But a shutdown that drags on more than that, hanging around at home, waiting for a resolution? Hard pass. The closets didn’t get cleaned out during COVID. It isn’t going to happen now.

Corney as it sounds, I work for my agency because I believe in its mission. If we don’t work, a lot of the most vulnerable Americans suffer more than they already are. It pisses me off.

What happens to my TSP contribution? I contribute a set amount, not a percentage, so I can max out at the end of the year. If it goes long enough to get back pay, will that come in one paycheck with only one contribution or will I get multiple paychecks with a contribution coming out of each?

Wow. Is this very different than usual procedure or are you guys high level leaders who hear more than the worker bees and middle managers? I'm not SES level so I'm not in on this stuff, but usually we're told not to plan for a shutdown because we're confident Congress will do their jobs up until September 29.

I did this a few years ago and got approval from my Agency to have the teacher side job. Now when there’s a shutdown I can immediately teach the next day. The only downside is there’s an annual minimum I have to do even when there aren’t shutdowns.

We had our first shutdown meeting today, just went over our posted lapse plan and answered some basic questions. Feels like it’s happening.

Will there be a baby boom next summer if the shutdown happens?
