the internet is forever

Yup. It is saved forever...

I’d like to know OP’s thoughts on this. OP, did you know that your post exists forever whether Jeff deletes it or not?

She'll need to have that thread and this thread deleted in order to completely wipe it from DCUM....

This just isn't going to end well for her.

It’s very meta.

FWIW, Jeff, while I enjoy your write-ups, I admit to having experienced a sick feeling in my stomach when you once discussed a thread I started. I'd already been roasted for what was a genuine question/problem on my end, and reading your characterization of my travails was difficult.

I've been online since Usenet days, so I know how to move forward with a thicker skin. However, I've been loath since then to share personal issues. What I notice happening lately is an abundance of what are clearly, to me, troll threads. I don't remember such a troll takeover as I've been seeing. It is likely unrelated to your recaps, but it's something I've noticed.

Could you please use the "report" button to send me a link or some other way to identify what I wrote about your thread? I would like to better understand your perspective, but it is impossible if I don't know what I wrote that was so upsetting.

Sure, I'll see if I can find it. It wasn't "so upsetting," but it was disconcerting and off-putting, if that makes sense. I felt I'd run the gamut already with pages of people accusing me of being dishonest or generally awful, and then having you raise the issue of the thread in the daily recap felt unkind. I acknowledge that perception is on me, and I both appreciate your work here & acknowledge your right to run your site how you prefer.

I have sympathy for op even though they seem to me to be overreacting. I think Jeff’s write up was perfectly fair but it would also seem that to respect precedent to take down the thread if an OP genuinely feels it makes them personally vulnerable or identifiable, even if they use words like dox and gaslight improperly.

Yes, the meta and potential for recursion is fabulous!

Then somebody makes a new thread about the summary of this thread about the summary of another thread. Infinite loops. Caucasian boy with blue eyes lives on forever.

CBWBE will join lightly fried tuna and Bobcat girl and the Chipotle and burgundy washcloth ladies!

I’m familiar with lightly fried tuna, but not the rest. Off to look them up.

Another here from the days of usenet.... the good 'ol days.

I don't quite understand how you or anyone could possibly have this type of feeling since it's all anonymous.... there are no usernames or handles to tie you back to anything so nobody knows who you are... nobody cares. For all I know, you and the OP could be the same person, there's no way for me to know. Sure, the admin has ways of tracking people and posts that normal users don't have access to but it's his site and he's the admin and that's how it goes.

Maybe it's people's technical ability and understanding of how things work and what is/isn't known/discernible but since there are no handles or anything to tie a posts together or back to an individual from a users perspective, I really don't see why anyone would feel bothered other than very briefly, in passing, if Jeff or any other rando on here said negative or off-putting here. I think you're all way too sensitive for an forum with this kind of anonymity.

So, has OP come back for a last ditch retort?

I'm sorry that you are upset but I don't think my summary of the thread was mean-spirited in any way. I was certainly not bullying you.

Now you're gaslighting. I don't care to get into a back and forth with someone mocking me. I'd like my thread deleted. This is the third request. Thank you and goodbye.

No, I am not going to remove the thread. At least not now. I just took the time and effort to read enough of it to write a summary which I just posted. That might lead others to want to read it and I don't want my efforts to be for nothing. I haven't mocked you and I am not gaslighting you. The fact that you are making such allegations is further justification for leaving the thread so that readers can judge my summary for themselves.

Again, I want my thread removed. I've now asked four times. I have revealed too much and I don't want it on here, especially when you lock it and dox my posts, to ridicule and mock me, and smear me as a troll (read liar). If I was a lying troll, as you weaponize your authority to erroneously claim, I wouldn't care. I am not a troll, I am not a liar. I am a woman of faith and you're deeply offending me right now. Delete the thread, delete the write-up, delete this thread. Delete it all, I don't care. I don't want this attention. I don't want my family subjected to this cyberbullying and mocking and doxing.

And now you're gaslighting me and refusing to delete the thread upon request, breaking all established precedent. Egging on your malicious sycophants to cyberbully and mock me some more. I'll never post another thread here.

Promise?

Dear OP:

Dox: search for and publish private or identifying information about (a particular individual) on the internet, typically with malicious intent.

That was definitely not done.

What does your faith have to do with anything? Nothing. Nobody called you a troll or a liar that I could see.

I want my thread removed out of fear of [more] doxing. The website has a precedent for deleting threads upon request. I've now politely requested my thread be deleted five times. It bolsters the point the webmaster is being malicious and gets off on ridiculous, mocking and cyberbullying innocent parties. Breaking precedent to really stick it to me. How virtuous. And of course the miserable vultures lap it up.

Your perception of “precedent” is irrelevant. You aren’t entitled to have anything you posted here removed because you throat a tantrum and demand so.

Anonymous wrote:I really dislike Jeff's summaries. I've been on this website since 2006 (when it was a listserve!) but the summaries make me not really want to post much of anything here.

I also think the summaries are often inaccurate and/or designed to rake up more controversy. As one small example, in the summary the other day of the MCPS bathroom policy change, he stated "Other posters are not convinced that armed police officers raiding school bathrooms is the solution." But that's not really what anyone suggested, and it's a pretty belittling way to frame the discussion (which is complicated and doesn't really have easy solutions). People are already inclined to over-simplify and disparage viewpoints -- do we really need these summaries to further inflame the situation?

I don't know if Jeff is doing this because he's bored, or to drive more clicks to the website, but I'm not a fan.

Just my two cents.

+1. And then play coy and act like he's not being a cyberbully and exploiting his insights into our posting history (read casually doxing innocent parties for his own selfish entertainment). I will never post anything personal on here again.

Once again, THAT US NOT WHAT DOXXING MEANS.

Anonymous wrote:OP I think you are really confused. It's an honor to have a thread so popular that you are privileged enough to be analyzed by Jeff on the blog. Are you new to DCUM?

I can see where you might be embarrassed that you posted so much identifying information in your post but why did it take Jeff's mentioning it as one of the most popular threads to get you to ask for it to be deleted? He did nothing to embarrass you further other than call you out as possibly being a troll, which you are only confirming with your multiple crazy rants.
