On the “Catholic/conservative” scale, where is Villanova?

Holy Cross is also a good option between BC and Fairfield/Scranton/St. Joes

Oh, yes. I always forget about Holy Cross- maybe because of the liberal arts designation while the other popular Jesuit schools are "universities." But what a fantastic school. Everyone I know who went there got a top notch education.

what's everybody's thoughts on Saint Louis University and Xavier University (OH)? I'm starting school this Fall and was admitted to both for undergrad and I'm trying to decide on both schools. I understand that Jesuit schools are predominantly progrerssive in nature. Which school would you say is the more conservative of the two?

L O L Notre Dame is not a high target. It’s a reach for everyone.

I don’t think Villanova is that conservative but it does seem to have a more homogenous student body than most schools. The kids I know who have gone there aren’t necessarily conservative but they are all Catholic.

If kid wouldn't attend ND if free b/c it's too conservative, they should not apply to Villanova or any Catholic University including BC.

True, except maybe Georgetown.

We met with the school college counselor this week, and she said that based on what she saw in the early round, Villanova would be a low reach for him - by comparison, she said Lehigh and Colgate are targets. (He's an unhooked majority kid who wants to study business.) So unless you are someone who is competitive for T10 schools, I wouldn't call Villanova a safety.

My son, 3.9/1480, applied to Villanova ED1 and was rejected last month. Also an unhooked majority business kid.

Yes! I am a pretty lapse Catholic and our kids now know more than me about the faith -courtesy of Jesuit HS.

I love the Jesuit focus on “men and women for others”. The community service aspect is huge and they are very progressive and inclusive.

Jesuit wit/humor is a real thing.

From Fordham prof:

Father Martin, an associate editor atAmerica magazine and media commentator familiarly dubbed the “Colbert Report chaplain” for his appearance on the popular show, spoke to the value of expressing more liveliness and laughter, or “salt and light,” among Catholics today.

“We’ve all met Catholics who seem to think that being religious means being deadly serious,” he said. “But of course, when you’re deadly serious, you’re seriously dead.

Ugh. So sorry.

It’s gotten more competitive down the line. We were told BC is a reach with 35 ACT/unweighted 4.0/4.5 from Catholic high school. Acceptance rates for GU, ND and BC are tougher each year, so Villanova, Fordham, etc are following that trend.

It’s very forgetful because it’s in woos-tah!

+1 My DH went to an all-boys Catholic high school in central Jersey that absolutely threw students at Villanova and St. Joe’s.

As a left leaning catholic villanova grad, I enjoyed the campus focus on social justice and the community service aspects of the faith. Never felt political. We weren’t sitting around debating abortion rights. Great campus and location. Wouldn’t hesitate to send my kids there. Student body still not very diverse, but that’s a catholic school issue generally
