You might not, but Catholics would. |
University of Scranton would probably be a safety school for one who is competitive for Villanova and in play for Notre Dame. While the academics at Scranton are adequate to good, the location is not. Close to a highway. Uninspiring campus. OP: Since you mentioned Notre Dame in your original post, I will share that the academics are outstanding, the campus is very beautiful, and the students are kind & intelligent. Most students appear to be fit & athletic. There is a nice hotel located right on campus if you plan to visit. |
I really doubt the posters saying it’s super conservative. I know several alumna and many current professors (I llive nearby) and all are very social-justice focused. The alums I know are Catholic but not dogmatic.
There is a homogeneous “look” to the students, though: white, blond, sporty. |
much of villanova’s recent popularity can be attributed to the success Jay Wright had with the basketball program - much in the same way coach K really lifted Duke in the public eye. Naysayers may pooh pooh that, but many believe it to be true.
So will be interesting to see if the recent drop off in the quality of the team has a corresponding reduction in interest from applicants |
DS graduated from Villanova and is Catholic and a progressive Democrat. He really enjoyed it. Yes there are conservative Catholics there and probably more Republicans than Democrats. But the overall vibe is not overly conservative and a more progressive kid will not feel out of place. I never heard him complain about it being MAGA. |
Wow. ND a high target and BC a match/fit? You sound so confident. |
The question asks about Catholic/conservative scale, not chances of admissions. Confidence is not in the equation. |
Why did you bring it up then? Very bizarre. |
If he digs BC, the right "likely" school is Marquette, not Nova. |
Scrantonian here and I tend to agree. Although the UofS school really caters to their students to make it a great experience for their students. Especially the out of state ones. |
Do you consider an A- an A? So very bizarre. |
sports programs always bring schools more into the public eye I bet little st peter's had a surge in applications after their final four run. Villanova has been decent at basketball for quite a while. I know they were known for that when I was applying to schools from a DE Catholic HS in the 90's. I didn't apply there (considered it, but opted not to), but one of our top students went there for engineering and probably soccer. He was one of my least favorite people in my class because he was so smug and full of himself, so sounds like he fit right in based on the above descriptions. |
Jesuits are Catholic. If OP is so turned off by Catholicism, that they wouldn't go to ND for free, I think any Catholic institution is a bad fit. |
Or Loyola or Fordham |
Another good match for a BC likely is Santa Clara (as a PP noted - this is not speaking in terms of admission but on Catholic/conservative scale) I also agree with PP who said Jesuit schools (like Georgetown, BC, Santa Clara, various Loyola-*) are quite different than other Catholic universities. They have great communities that foster lover of learning, investing in on-campus inclusivity, and giving back to society. Both Catholics and non-Catholics thrive. |
