On the “Catholic/conservative” scale, where is Villanova?

If kid wouldn't attend ND if free b/c it's too conservative, they should not apply to Villanova or any Catholic University including BC.

BC is Jesuit. We're catholic in name only and DS, who is socially more liberal, liked everything about BC.
I wouldn't lump Jesuit in the Catholic bin.

You might not, but Catholics would.

Actually, significant number of Catholics are anywhere from saddened and disheartened to completely outraged at how non Catholic the jesuits have become over the past 10 years, particularly in higher education.

Most practicing and devout Catholics would consider the jesuits only marginally catholic.

The Neumann List universities.

We met with the school college counselor this week, and she said that based on what she saw in the early round, Villanova would be a low reach for him - by comparison, she said Lehigh and Colgate are targets. (He's an unhooked majority kid who wants to study business.) So unless you are someone who is competitive for T10 schools, I wouldn't call Villanova a safety.

Your counselor is probably incorrect. It would be more than a low reach, probably more like a reach.

My kid was deferred at both ND and Villanova.

4.2

Exceptional recommendations
Strong essays
State awards
Etc, etc.

Me again. That should be 1500/3.9. Not 1400.

Ah.

Just saw this correction of SATs.

Still a reach, but more like a deferred/wait list reach vs a straight out rejection.

He is only marginally catholic, like a cradle catholic that likes the ceremonial aspects but doesn't believe in the tenets of the faith.

Biden would fall into the culturally catholic bucket.

Yep, 100% this.

OP: Why would your son reject Notre Dame ? Does he envision ND as being too Catholic or too strict ?

I visited ND about 18 months ago. Very attractive students, beautiful campus, kind people, but would not be a good fit for a partier.

too catholic; too conservative; too remote; too cold; too insular; too "I don't want to be around anyone I know who goes there"

OP, from all of your comments I don't think a Catholic university is a good fit for your child. Look elsewhere; these schools are not going to change for you.

Yeah, I think the OP will be hugely disappointed to learn that BC, while Jesuit, is still very much a Catholic school.

I went to BC as a non-Catholic (and from a family that never went to church or practiced any religion). It's an awesome school and more about community than it is about religion or the Catholic church.

Thanks for the feedback!

What in the world are you talking about?

You post shows you are very uneducated on the Catholic response to the illegal immigrant crisis.

Catholic Charities is providing one of the largest if not the largest amount of support for illegal immigrant families, and has been for qulte some time.

You post demonstrates a complete lack of knowlege of Catholic issues and perspectives.

LOL

Villanova farms kids from Long Island like crazy, it definitely has a large MAGA contingency.

In 2020, Nassau and Suffolk again split, with Suffolk voting for Trump, however by a greatly reduced margin of just 232 votes, and Nassau voting for Democrat Joe Biden, by an increased margin. This, in contrast to 2016, led to an overall combined victory for Biden on Long Island.
