Distressed dad says 'never did I think I would have a problem finding food for my baby in America'

Expect more shortages of essentials soon. Fertilizer costs have jumped something like 500% and that’s what farmers need to grow food. This was happening late last year and made the news a couple months ago.

I suspect shortages in any small essential food and household necessities.

Car prices are set to increase as well…they have by 40-50% already so expect to see any decent vehicle with good mileage to be self well above market value.

+1 true.

Buckle up.

The shutdown of a Michigan infant formula plant has disrupted the supply of products that are a lifeline for thousands of people with rare medical conditions

An infant formula plant shutdown triggered by two infant deaths has created a new nightmare for some parents: There’s now a dangerous shortage of specialized formulas that are the only thing keeping many children and adults alive.

The Abbott Nutrition plant in Sturgis, Mich., was not just one of the biggest suppliers of infant formula nationally, but it was also the major supplier of several lesser-known specialty formulas that are a lifeline for thousands of people with rare medical conditions, including metabolic, allergic and gastrointestinal disorders, which can make eating regular foods impossible or even dangerous. The situation has not only rattled parents and medical professionals, but has raised questions about whether the federal government should do more to ensure critical, life-sustaining supply chains don’t break down.

The Biden Administration needs to do something quickly. This is very important.

Something is being done. Do you think the government should be building plants to make formula? How long do you think that would take? Or perhaps they should allow infant formula contaminated with deadly bacteria to be sold to unsuspecting parents? How would you solve this problem?

This is, indeed, what some are implicitly suggesting. And both are absurd. The government did exactly what it was supposed to do here in shutting that plant down. And there is no safety net. And while I would hope and like there to be one, many of you asking for it now would have called that "socialism." You can't have it both way. Government either is helpful or it's not.

Wow, I’m speechless after reading the responses to this thread and that’s saying a lot given that this is DCUM. Complete lack of empathy for what these parents are going through.

Has anyone actually said what they think Biden should be doing?

You posted a link to recall information.

Elected officials are elected to help Americans and should be able to do something. They have the education, experience, and power to help Americans.

The link I posted gives details of how patients/parents can get hold of specialty formula:

"Abbott has confirmed with the FDA that the company will consider release of these products on a case-by-case basis, depending on product availability and the severity of the individual’s need. Patients and caregivers seeking access to these products should contact Abbott directly to request that a product be made available to them by calling 1-800-881-0876."

No it does not. It says patients can call that number and request formula be made available to them. There’s no guarantee it will be available (if the factory isn’t producing it, your SOL). Also the FDA will evaluate severity of need and that may not be a seamless process. There’s a reason some parents are fearing for their children’s lives.

Wow, the FDA will make that decision? That’s epic BS

NP. Used car prices are going down. Gas prices are going down, except diesel which is flat. Supply chain is still messed up.

9 pages and no one has suggested any solution, just a bunch of "someone needs to do something, think of the children!'

What exactly do you suggest as a solution?

It’s the best system they’ve got. FDA says the plant that makes all these specialty formulas is unsafe, so if they’re going to allow people to use formula for their kids from that plant they have to assess that the kid is more likely to die from lack of specialty formula than the potential for contamination. FDA was right to close a factory that led to the death of two kids but No one has explained why the factory is still unsafe 4 months after being shut down.

Hard and expensive to decontaminate the plant.
Maybe it’s not worth it.
Btw- we’ve already decided as a country that the unhealthy and unproductive aren’t worthy of life.
Where have you people been for the last couple of years.

Feed them apple sauce or farina or easily digestible purées really.

What do emerging markets or undeveloped countries who do have $100 per carton speciality formula fee their babies?

This. Are you seriously arguing that we should just accept living by the same standards as countries having a sizable populations that lack electricity and indoor plumbing?

Probably because it's not profitable "enough" for the company and they might have to put money into it. On top of still present supply chain problems.
