He needs to open his own factory since this one is closed.

Sure, you give him the authority to do that and we should have a plant up and running in 3-5 years, if everything goes well.

OP asked a dumb question, gets a dumb answer.

The shutdown of a Michigan infant formula plant has disrupted the supply of products that are a lifeline for thousands of people with rare medical conditions

An infant formula plant shutdown triggered by two infant deaths has created a new nightmare for some parents: There’s now a dangerous shortage of specialized formulas that are the only thing keeping many children and adults alive.

The Abbott Nutrition plant in Sturgis, Mich., was not just one of the biggest suppliers of infant formula nationally, but it was also the major supplier of several lesser-known specialty formulas that are a lifeline for thousands of people with rare medical conditions, including metabolic, allergic and gastrointestinal disorders, which can make eating regular foods impossible or even dangerous. The situation has not only rattled parents and medical professionals, but has raised questions about whether the federal government should do more to ensure critical, life-sustaining supply chains don’t break down.

The Biden Administration needs to do something quickly. This is very important.

Something is being done. Do you think the government should be building plants to make formula? How long do you think that would take? Or perhaps they should allow infant formula contaminated with deadly bacteria to be sold to unsuspecting parents? How would you solve this problem?

You posted a link to recall information.

Elected officials are elected to help Americans and should be able to do something. They have the education, experience, and power to help Americans.

The link I posted gives details of how patients/parents can get hold of specialty formula:

"Abbott has confirmed with the FDA that the company will consider release of these products on a case-by-case basis, depending on product availability and the severity of the individual’s need. Patients and caregivers seeking access to these products should contact Abbott directly to request that a product be made available to them by calling 1-800-881-0876."

Why Biden using the defense production act? Why isn't he making people go back to work?

My soon to be high school graduate is not 15. He, like most high school seniors, is 17/soon to be 18. And he'll be moving in a few months to go to college--no different than someone his age moving to get a job.

IMO THE GOVERMENT NEEDS TO TAKE OVER AND START doing baby formula. The Presidnet has the power to do this and he should!

Because while it was bad that the formula was contaminated, some children are dependent on formula that was only made in that plant which remains closed after months. Some kids with severe food allergies and metabolic conditions will die without their formula.

Okay? And what do you want - the FDA to re-open a contaminated food line so more kids can die? Tell the parents to source non-Abbott or even non-American formula. I hear Americans cross the border to Canada and Mexico for lower life-saving prescription drugs all the time.

I think it goes without saying that no one should allow themselves or their kids to become dependent on a single source of anything, but these are some pretty stressed out parents dealing with some pretty significant medical issues so I’m not going to blame them here. But if they thought the government was going to fire up the socialism machine to save their kids, they really haven’t been paying attention. The extreme right wing in this country will fight tooth and nail things that could save thousands of kids, let alone a few highly disabled ones. The sanctity of the baby’s life ends the day the birth mom decides to keep it.

this isn’t a picky kid who likes a particular brand of cereal. These are children who will die because their body rejects most sources of nutrients.

No it does not. It says patients can call that number and request formula be made available to them. There’s no guarantee it will be available (if the factory isn’t producing it, your SOL). Also the FDA will evaluate severity of need and that may not be a seamless process. There’s a reason some parents are fearing for their children’s lives.

Yes, I am the PP and I know this and I wish the government would make the formulas for these kids so there wouldn’t be a single profit motivated supplier for them. I am also the one pointing out that the “pro life” wing of this country will never let that happen because it’s “socialism” but will be happy to use Abbott’s personal failure as an example of Biden’s incompetence.

What on earth and how long does this last?? Their whole life?

Yes, have you heard of phenylketonuria? The person can't metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine and must consume protein sources that don't contain it (which are mainly from the special formulas). Also, galactosemia - the infant can't metabolize the carbohydrate galactose (a component of lactose) and must consume special formulas without it. If they don't follow the special diet, they have severe health problems that can lead to illness and death. There are many more rare metabolic diseases like this.

And the child or person is otherwise healthy and productive?

Are you questioning whether unhealthy and unproductive people deserve to live?

If you have access to the needed for in your area consider. Buying and donating.

Put pressure on politicians to change their stance .

This isn't just li.ited to formula so if you have means to donate, money gift cards or food to those I need do so

And again apy pressure to piliti Ian's.

Or continue to post nonsense on DCUM

Just stop with the stupid, snarky comments.

This is a huge issue right now.... for babies who cannot take traditional formula, for mothers unable to nurse, and even for some older children and adults with digestive issues.
And, Biden, et al, are silent.

The point being made by this "snarky comment" is also important. And huge issue right now.

What are you proposing Biden do on this particular one you are so concerned about?

There is no formula on the shelves. My youngest is 16 so we are well beyond needing formula--but because of this thread I just walked through the formula aisle at Target this morning. There were two (two!) cans of powdered formula. I even looked to see if there was a sign saying that they were keeping the formula in a back room or anything--nope! Two cans of formula total in the store. I'm not going to buy those two cans--because right now I wouldn't even know where to donate those specific brands/types. Better to leave them on the shelf so someone whose baby uses them can buy it.
