Are conservatives boycotting Disney now?

Do you really think he actually hates gay people? Or is just a cynical bastard who sees political benefit in this? (Which is, in some ways, worse than actual hatred.)

Yes I do. You can't do this much harm to gay people without actually hating them or seeing them as less than.

Please clarify what you see as the harm being done to gay people.

I don't think many people are mad about internal emails sent to employees denouncing the education bill. Many parents are mad about the video with the producer bragging about adding queerness to children's programming. Disney had built up a lot of trust among parents for producing wholesome entertainment suitable for innocent children. I would imagine they want to send a message about that. I know people who have canceled Disney plus. I never subscribed but at friends' houses I've seen their new stuff and frankly it looks depressing. If I'm putting on a movie for my little children I want it to be joyful.

Well there is already a lot of push back against the crazy right in the schools. Not many people agree with your world view.

Maybe if you left your woke echo chamber, you would see that "not many" people is actually 50% of this country.

You believe that 50% of the country opposes, for example, gay marriage? Care to supply a poll that supports that?

The issue isn’t about gay marriage. I suspect you know that. It’s about exposing children to topics around sex and gender ideology. Gay marriage is not a problem.

so married gays aren't a problem, and a boy mouse kissing a girl mouse is fine, but if a boy frog kisses another boy frog, it's a sign that society is ending?

OK. But once again, why is that a problem?

Right. And God forbid Disney changes their announcements from “ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls” to “dreamers of all ages.” Civilization is truly ending, and children are being vandalized.

I think you dramatically underestimate the cynicism and lust for power of GOP politicians in general, and Desantis in particular.

Orange County FL’s FY21-22 budget was about $5 billion. Osceola County’s was $1.6 billion. How the hell are they going to absorb $1 billion in bond debt from Reedy Creek?

Disney World was able to stay open and has moved corporate employees out of CA to FL. They need FL to survive. I hope Disney comes to its senses, sorry libs you are losing.

To the contrary, if DeSantis & company pull the rug out from the Reedy Creek Improvement District, taxpayers will need to pay $1 billion to cover the services that Disney now covers.

And that’s in addition to the $1 billion in bond debt the district currently holds.

Not to mention, it’s almost certain that Orange and Osceola Counties do not currently have the road maintenance crews, fire fighters, police officers, etc. needed to service that area. Currently, Disney has a security crew that provides some law enforcement, while leaving arrests and other matters to local authorities. The counties will have to cover all enforcement now.

Good luck with that!

On the other hand, they can tax the hell out of Disneyland. All of the incentives that local governments have to give in order to land large developments like Disney don't exist and the infrastructure already there is too expensive for Disney to threaten to leave.

DeSantis can't tax Disneyland. DeSantis is the governor of Florida. Disneyland is in California. I realize Republicans have authoritarian impulses and are in general opposed to American values, but this just isn't possible.

The issue is competely bogus since no schools "expose children to topics around sex and gender ideology." At least not at the age groups in question (K-3). There are age-appropriate conversations at older ages, of course, because, you know, gay people exist.

And the same people who are pushing this nonsense absolutely oppose gay marriage. They hate gay people. They are hateful, hateful people. The irony is they think they are so pious and yet it is they who will burn in the fiery pits of Hell.

They just absorbed billions worth of taxable land as well as billions in taxable revenue

Moreover, Florida law prevents local governments from increasing taxes by more than 10% at one time. So it’s not possible to tax WDW up the wazoo to pay for this.

What about “$1 billion in bond debt” do you not understand?

They also have to pay for essential services to that land (fire, water, trash collection, road maintenance, all enforcement).

I’m not sure what you mean by “billions in taxable revenue.” Disney pays taxes on what it generates.

I wonder what Reedy Creek's tax rate was? Did Disney keep it artificially high to write off the expense or artificially low?

The land has one of the most profitable theme parks in the world on it. That theme park can now be taxed. Reedy creek was already 'taxing' it to service the debt and to pay for services. Between the already existing tourist taxes and sales taxes, the counties will come out fine financially.

Not sure, but here’s their FY22 budget: https://www.rcid.org/document/2022-rcid-operating-budget/

There are a lot of documents on the RCID website: https://www.rcid.org/documents/
