| Over the dust up with Desantis? My ILs proposed a family trip to Disney next year. Our kids are young and I wasn’t super excited about the idea but they offered to pay for most of it and it is really the only time that works for everyone before the older cousins go off to college. So SIL has been making the arrangements for lodging, which parks we’d go to, etc. But FIL just told DH and SIL we need to pause the planning until we “see what happens with Disney.” No one had any idea what he was talking about, it’s apparently not a money thing, but then DH heard from someone else that some conservative pundits are encouraging folks to boycott Disney over their opposition of Desantis’ new law. I mean, we never asked for this trip so I am fine to cancel but at some point we need to book flights and I’m not messing around with needless drama for months. Is this really a thing? Or is everyone worries Disney would go under if they lose their tax exempt status? |
| What morons. |
|
Yes, it's really a thing. Sigh.
Google Ted Cruz and Disney if you want to read about today's weird news. Looks like it's going to get blown into political talking points for a while. I would just totally cancel and go some other time when you have control over the timing of the trip, instead of other family members. |
| I hope so! We're going next week, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for lower crowds! |

No one is boycotting Disney. Disney has a huge socially conservative clientele, here and abroad, you can bet they're going to cater to it, while virtue signaling to try and keep their more progressive employees reasonably compliant. It's a struggle between progressive Hollywood, and paying customers. Disney management is used to threading a fine line between the two. It's done so for decades. The previous CEO was more progressive than usual, so that's why there's now a little reframing going on with this CEO, who doesn't want to stick his neck out quite as much. It will blow over.

+1, if you aren't into it anyway, there is no point in trying to push through with your FIL. Depending on age of kids, maybe you could do Universal Studios/Harry Potter instead, or, if you just really don't want to do a theme park, plan a beach/resort vacation in it's place (that would be my choice). I am confused by the whole thing as well because I though not long ago it came out that Disney had donated money and supported candidates who were pushing for these anti-LGBTQ+ laws? And progressives were mad at Disney for that? And now it's swung the other way? Disney is a corporation and the main thing they care about is money. I don't understand why this is so hard for people to understand. |

Yes they’re starting to boycott. I am on some Disney groups and they’re not explicitly saying they are, because of group rules, but it’s political.
Also, I didn’t know they were tax exempt! |

10:37 again.
All the political posturing you're seeing now is for the midterms. Your trip next year is safe. |

I think this is stupid and hilarious. I'm experiencing a bit of schadenfreude watching this unfold. My ex-ILs are all big conservative Trumper DeSantis lovers from FL and other southern states and they also LOVE Disney.

| Liberals who previously scoffed at going to Disney should start flooding the gates. |
Yes! Disney has long supported republicans through donations, and democrats have been more critical of the breaks it receives. It’s a total knee jerk reaction by the Florida GOP with no consideration for the domino effect that it would cause. I think ultimately that they are bluffing but if this were to actually go through it could prove to be DeSantis’ undoing. |
What an insightful and intelligent observation! |
Disney isn’t tax exempt. |
| I live in a fairly conservative area and no one with kids is boycotting Disney or will be boycotting Disney. Maybe on Twitter but not in real life. They can unload their talking points and outrage on social media while heading south to DW. |
(The second) 10:37 here And I didn’t think they were which is why I was surprised when OP said they were. Either way, in my Disney groups there are people who are boycotting/not patronizing Disney. That’s fine, it’s completely their right. The same way some people don’t patronize Chick-fil-A. Less crowds is always better! |
